Paul now gives the solution for Israel’s inability to keep the law of the Mosaic Covenant.
The Mosaic Covenant without the Holy Spirit is a representation of man trying to achieve godliness by his own efforts and strength. The Mosaic Covenant explained the need for the power of God dwelling in us to enable us to overcome.
It is through conversion to the New Covenant by sincere repentance from sin, and a commitment to “Go and sin no more (John 8:11);” that the sacrifice of Christ will be applied and the Gift of the overcoming power of Christ to dwell within us through the Holy Spirit may be received.
If we sincerely repent and commit to STOP sinning, the New Covenant provides the overcoming power of Christ to dwell within us and to overcome sin with us through the Holy Spirit!
Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 8:4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk [live] not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
If we live by every Word of God through the indwelling of God’s Spirit, we are delivered from sin and eternal death.
If we seek after worldliness and the things of the flesh, we follow the temporary things that bring eternal death! If we seek after the spiritual to keep the whole Word of God through the power of Christ dwelling in us; we seek life eternal!
8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
The carnal mind, a mind without the Spirit of God; remains in bondage to sin in worldliness and cannot overcome sin by its own strength.
We must become spiritually minded through sincere repentance, forgiveness and the Gift of God’s Spirit, to be liberated from bondage to sin and worldliness.
Then to remain free from bondage of sin, we must continually follow the whole Word of God without compromise, into a full unity with the nature of God and eternal life!
8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh [are worldly minded] cannot please God. 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you.
Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ [which spirit leads us to live by every Word of God without any compromise or turning to the left or the right], he is none of his.
8:10 And if Christ be in you, the [our carnal worldly body] body is dead [in baptism] because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness [commandment keeping] .
The Spirit of God will change our nature from worldliness to godliness, IF we follow it in keeping the whole Word of God; and if we keep the whole Word of God we shall be fully changed into spirit on that day!
8:11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
8:12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 8:13 For if ye live after the flesh [live your own way contrary to God’s Word], ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body [destroying sin], ye shall live [eternally].
8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
If we are sincerely repentant and turn away from the deeds of sinful flesh through the power of God, to live by every Word of God; we shall become the adopted children of God the Father! And we will become a part of the collective bride of Christ being in complete SPIRITUAL UNITY with Jesus Christ and God the Father!
If we have sincerely repented and committed ourselves to go and sin no more (John 8:11); the atoning sacrifice of Christ will be applied to us (Rom 2:13), and then through the overcoming power of the Holy Spirit [IF we use it] we are freed from death which is the wages of sin.
8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear [if we sincerely repent and STOP sinning we need not fear damnation for our sincerely repented and forgiven PAST sins]; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
What does the commandment say? Honour your father and mother! If we are to honor our physical fathers in their imperfections; how much more are we to honor our perfect Father in heaven?
8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
The trials we face to be zealous to live by every Word of God are as nothing compared to the reward awaiting us for faithful passionate continual burning zeal for the whole Word of God to learn it and to keep it.
8:18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 8:19 For the earnest expectation of the creature [creation] waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. 8:20 For the creature [creation] was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
The whole creation itself will be delivered from the decay into which it was subjected to, in the hope that we would learn from our own mistakes to follow God our Father in heaven.
8:21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 8:22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
We who are faithful followers of God the Father and Jesus Christ, also wait upon our change to eternal life.
8:23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body [from flesh into spirit].
We wait in hope, which is faith in the promises of God.
8:24 For we are saved by hope [faith that Christ rose from the dead and hope in God’s promise that the faithful may like Jesus, also rise from the grave]: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth [already has], why doth he yet hope for? 8:25 But if we hope for that [what] we see not [We hope for our salvation which we seek and do not already have. For salvation is given to the faithful overcomer], then do we with patience wait for it [wait for our change to spirit at the resurrection].
The flesh is weak and subject to sin; but the Spirit of God enables us to overcome, providing the things we need to overcome, even when we do not know what we need; IF we follow God’s Spirit and keep the whole Word of God without any turning or compromise.
8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
8:27 And he that searcheth the hearts [Christ our High Priest] knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit [the nature and mind of God], because he maketh intercession [Christ as our High Priest, helps the faithful to overcome through the agency of the Spirit] for the saints according to the will of God.
8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Those who God the Father calls to Christ are predestined to become just like Jesus Christ; in the same faithful passionate zeal for the whole Word of God that Jesus Christ had for the Father!
The very purpose of our calling is to become just like Jesus Christ, in wholehearted enthusiasm to live by every Word of God!
To turn aside from, or to compromise with, or to reject a burning zeal for every Word of God; is a betrayal of our calling!
8:29 For whom he did foreknow [those the Father called], he [God intended that those he called would be conformed into the very likeness of Christ, in Christ-like zeal for God the Father] also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, [those God called, he called to conform to the image (to be just like) his son; (who kept his Father’s commandments)] that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 8:30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
If we respond positively to the Father’s call with sincere repentance and a commitment to go and sin no more; we will be justified by the application of the sacrifice of Christ; and if we continue in the righteousness of the whole Word of God, we are predestined to be glorified in the resurrection to spirit!
As long as we rely on God to deliver us from all sin and we follow God the Father and Jesus Christ in all things, to keep the whole Word of God without any compromise; we are predestined to eternal life.
8:31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? 8:33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. 8:34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.
Our relationship with God the Father is personal and direct through Jesus Christ our High Priest and our ONLY Mediator. If we are zealous to learn and to keep the whole Word of God, without compromise, regardless of the cost: No pope, priest, saint, god or goddess; No man, elder, corporate church leader or corporate church organization; can come between you and GOD ALMIGHTY!
8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 8:36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 8:37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
If we suffer or die for our zeal to serve our God; he shall raise us up to spirit on that day!
If we compromise with any part of the Word of God to avoid trials, or fall to temptation, or fear men more then we love God; if we idolize men or organizations and exalt their words above the Word of God: We are condemned to eternal death, unless we sincerely repent!
8:38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 8:39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
If we are faithful to live by every Word of God with Christ-like zeal: Nothing can separate us from our Mighty God the Father. Only our own sins can separate us from God (Isaiah 59:1).
If we turn away from zeal to learn and to keep the whole Word of God, if we instead have a zeal to follow the traditions of men, making idols of men; we are destined to eternal destruction unless we repent sincerely.
Be zealous to live by every Word of God! Prove all things by God’s Word! Let no man take your crown!
