This is primarily a prophecy about Caiaphas the high priest and his plot to murder Jesus Christ. The Psalm curses Caiaphas and his descendants in the flesh until they rise from the grave and are ashamed of what he had done in plotting the murder of the Christ.
Psalm 109:1 Hold not thy peace [against this wicked high priest], O God of my praise;
Caiaphas spoke deceit and lies against Christ to convince the Sanhedrin to kill him.
109:2 For the mouth of the wicked and the mouth of the deceitful are opened [speak against God the Father’s faithful Son] against me [against Jesus Christ]: they have spoken against me with a lying tongue. 109:3 They compassed me about also with words of hatred; and fought against me without a cause.
109:4 For my love [for Christ’s love for God the Father and his rebuking of sin] they are [make themselves] my adversaries: but I give myself unto prayer.
Jesus gave his life for those who hated him.
109:5 And they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love.
A prophecy of the Aaronic high priest who conspired to kill Jesus Christ.
Joseph Caiaphas, known simply as Caiaphas (Hebrew: יהוסף בר קיפא; Greek: Καϊάφας) in the New Testament, was the high priest who organized the plot to kill Jesus. Caiaphas is also said to have been involved in the Sanhedrin trial of Jesus. Caiaphas and his posterity are here prophesied to be accursed because he was the man behind the plot to kill Messiah the Christ.
109:6 Set thou a wicked man over him: and let Satan stand at his right hand. 109:7 When he shall be judged, let him be condemned: and let his prayer become sin. 109:8 Let his days be few; and let another take his office. 109:9 Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow. 109:10 Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.
109:11 Let the extortioner catch [take away] all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labour [the Roman prince Titus destroyed Jerusalem and the Temple, stopping the Daily Sacrifice; which Daniel was told would not resume nor a new Temple be built; until after Christ returns]. 109:12 Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children. 109:13 Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.
109:14 Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. 109:15 Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth. 109:16 Because that he remembered not to shew mercy, but persecuted the poor and needy [poor in spirit and humble before God] man [Jesus Christ], that he might even slay the broken in heart [spiritually humble before God].
The murderous heart of Caiaphas sealed his doom.
109:17 As he loved cursing, so let it come unto him: as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him. 109:18 As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones. 109:19 Let it be unto him as the garment which covereth him, and for a girdle wherewith he is girded continually.
109:20 Let this be the reward of mine adversaries [the plotters to murder Jesus Christ] from the LORD, and of them that speak evil against my soul.
God the Father delivered Messiah his son from death and the grave and exalted him to be a spiritual High Priest forever, restoring the High Priesthood of Melchisedec which was BEFORE Aaron and replacing the transitory physical Aaronic priesthood
109:21 But do thou for me, O GOD the Lord, for thy name’s sake: because thy mercy is good, deliver thou me.
Jesus Christ was poor in the spirit of self-will and pride and very humble towards God the Father.
109:22 For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.
Jesus allowed himself to be abused out of respect for God the Father’s will that he submit the indignities and be sacrificed for the sins of humanity.
109:23 I am gone like the shadow when it declineth: I am tossed up and down as the locust.
Jesus fasted especially as his time approached.
109:24 My knees are weak through fasting; and my flesh faileth of fatness. 109:25 I became also a reproach unto them: when they looked upon me they shaked their heads.
Jesus prayed for deliverance from death and the grave so that all might know that he loved God and was loved by God; and that God had delivered him.
109:26 Help me, O LORD my God: O save me according to thy mercy: 109:27 That they may know that this is thy hand; that thou, LORD, hast done it.
Let those wicked men who curse Christ be greatly ashamed when they arise from the grave; but Messiah rejoices for he has overcome Satan and worldliness.
109:28 Let them curse, but bless thou: when they arise, let them be ashamed; but let thy servant rejoice. 109:29 Let mine adversaries be clothed with shame, and let them cover themselves with their own confusion, as with a mantle.
109:30 I will greatly praise the LORD [God the Father who delivered Messiah the Son and will deliver all his faithful] with my mouth; yea, I will praise him among the multitude.
109:31 For he shall stand at the right hand of the poor [the poor in the spirit of pride and self-will], to save him [resurrect Christ and in due time all the faithful] from those that condemn his soul.
Jesus Christ, after giving his life in sacrifice for the sins of humanity was resurrected to spirit and ascended back to the glory which he had given up to be made flesh; and remains there waiting for the appointed time to return to the earth and rule all nations.
Psalm 110:1 The LORD [God the Father] said unto my Lord [Messiah the Christ], Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
Jesus Christ will gather up God’s faithful in a resurrection to spirit, and will then come with God’s chosen to rule all nations. Jesus Christ will rule the earth from Jerusalem and God’s chosen will rule over the nations around the world.
110:2 The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.
All peoples will be thoroughly humbled in great tribulation and when Messiah comes and destroys the wicked gathered at Jerusalem, the people of Jerusalem will be ready to welcome him with even greater rejoicing than when he entered the city before his crucifixion.
110:3 Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.
This Jesus Christ was the High Priest of God the Father Melchizedek before he gave up his God-hood to be made flesh and die for the repented sins of mankind. He was then resurrected to spirit and returned to his office of spirit High Priest Melchizedek, replacing the temporary physical priesthood of Aaron which ended with the death of the Husband of Israel.
110:4 The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
When Christ comes he will destroy all resistance and bring in a reign of godly righteousness.
110:5 The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath. 110:6 He shall judge among the heathen [unrepentant wicked], he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries.
The water of the brook is an analogy of the Holy Spirit, and Christ was full of God’s Spirit and zeal for every Word of God; therefore he was lifted up in resurrection to eternal life and exalted as King over all rulers.
110:7 He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head.
