Historically the French Hugenot magistrate M. le Loyer’s book “The Ten Lost Tribes“, published in 1590, was one of the first publications to claim that the “Anglo-Saxon, Celtic, Scandinavian, Germanic, and associated cultures”were direct descendants of the ancient Israelites.
The very well educated and well read king James I of Britain and Scotland [(James Charles Stuart; 19 June 1566 – 27 March 1625) was King of Scotland as James VI from 24 July 1567 and King of England and Ireland as James I from the union of the Scottish and English crowns on 24 March 1603]; jumped on the publication and decided that he was the king of Israel and a descendant of Solomon.
The circumstance that king James 1 considered himself to be the king of Israel and a descendant of Solomon, added considerably to James’ motivation to command a translation of the Bible into English, which became known as the King James Bible.
King James reign was also important because it was the first time England and Scotland had the same monarch. He was the first monarch of England from the House of Stuart. The previous English monarch had been Elizabeth I. She had died without any children, so the English agreed to have a Scottish monarch because James was the son of Mary, Queen of Scots, thus the closest relative Elizabeth had.
After James died, his son Charles 1 [reigned March 1625 – 1649] used his belief that he was the king of Israel to insist on the Divine Right of Kings, and commanded that all churches use the English Book of Common Prayer in place of the Bible or other religious works. This brought on the English Civil War. At the end of the war in 1649, Charles was executed, and the so called “Divine Right of Kings” to decide religious beliefs on behalf of the nation came to an end.
King James 1 of England and Scotland, was the first British monarch who claimed to be from the Davidic line, which was claimed for political and personal egoist reasons.
This claim of the royal line of David became confused with the identity of the nation.
In 1649, John Sadler published “The Rights of the Kingdom,” which argues for an ‘Israelite genealogy for the British people. Later Richard Brothers published “A Revealed Knowledge of the Prophecies and Times” in 1794, John Wilson published “Our Israelitish Origin” (1840s), and John Pym Yeatman published “The Shemetic Origin of the Nations of Western Europe” (1879).
In the later 19th century, Edward Hine, Edward Wheeler Bird, and Herbert Aldersmith developed the British Israelite movement.
In 1878 the Anglo-Ephraim Association of London, which followed Wilson embraced the broader community of western European Germanic peoples among those they believed were favored by God, would be absorbed into Bird’s Metropolitan Anglo-Israel Association, espousing the Anglo-exclusive view promoted by Hine.
In 1914, the thirty-fourth year of its publication, the Anglo-Israel Almanac listed details of a large number of Kingdom Identity Groups operating independently throughout the British Isles and in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, and the United States of America.
In 1919, the British-Israel-World Federation (BIWF) was founded in London, and Covenant Publishing was founded in 1922. William Pascoe Goard was the first director of the publishing house. During this time, several prominent figures patronized the BIWF organization and its publisher; Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone was Patron-in-chief in pre-World War II days. One of the most notable members was William Massey, then Prime Minister of New Zealand.
Due to the expansive nature of the British Empire, believers in British Israelism spread worldwide and the BIWF expanded its organization to the commonwealth. Howard Rand promoted the teaching and became National Commissioner of the Anglo-Saxon Federation of America in 1928. He published The Bulletin, later renamed The Messenger of the Covenant. More recently, it has been renamed Destiny.
During its heyday in the early 20th century, British Israelism was also supported by John Fisher, 1st Baron Fisher. A prolific author on British Israelism during the later 1930s and 40s was Alexander James Ferris.
See Source The above was rewritten and links to material researched by me have been added.
In the 1930’s Herbert Armstrong claimed that he had discovered British Israelism through his own personal studies and that the issue had not been known prior to him. He later wrote the book “The United States and the British Commonwealth in Prophecy,” which consisted largely of quotes from J.H. Allen’s 1902 book “Judah’s Scepter and Joseph’s Birthright” as well as other publications and contained no personal research.
In copying directly from other sources without doing any personal study on the matter, he also copied many of the errors contained in those publications. Herbert later ordered Herman Hoeh to prove him correct and his “research” resulted in the same mix.
Over the past decades numerous difficulties with the material have been discovered, the primary issue being the idea that modern British Monarchs could be descended from David and Solomon.
In fact, two separate Identity issues are confused, mixing together the national identity issue with the identity of the monarchs.
Let me illustrate this way; when the ten tribes were separated off from the Davidic line and given to a new king: Was Jeroboam a descendant of David? No. When ruled by a different king than one descended from David was Ephraim still Ephraim? Of course!
In other words it is NOT necessary that the British monarch be descended from David, for the British people to have descended from the tribe of Ephraim!
Persons hostile to the the national identity have taken advantage of the confusion between the monarch identity issue, which is highly questionable; and the national identity issue: until today very many in the Assemblies [including many elders] no longer believe in any part of this teaching, either about the nations or about the monarchs.
In this article I will not try to present questionable “proofs.” I intend to present the Holy Scriptures on the subject and then look at those nations which most fully fulfill the scriptural descriptions; and surprise, they do come out very closely to the generally accepted teachings on the subject.
The next article will be a study of the teaching that the British Monarchs are descended from the line of David. That teaching is where most of the problems lie.
Moses before his death blessed the tribes and prophesied from God of their latter days when they shall become many independent nations on this earth
33:1 And this is the blessing, wherewith Moses the man of God blessed the children of Israel before his death.
33:2 And he said, The LORD came from Sinai, and rose up from Seir unto them; he shined forth from mount Paran, and he came with ten thousands of saints: from his right hand went a fiery law for them.
33:3 Yea, he loved the people; all his saints are in thy hand: and they sat down at thy feet; every one shall receive of thy words.
33:4 Moses commanded us a law, even the inheritance of the congregation of Jacob.
33:5 And he [God] was king in Jeshurun, when the heads of the people and the tribes of Israel were gathered together.
I am going to add the Prophetic Blessings of Jacob in Genesis 49 beside the Prophetic Blessings of Moses, to give a fuller picture of each tribe in the latter days.
I will identify ONLY those tribes whose modern identity is certain. It is obvious that there has been a very substantial mixing of races and the tribal identity refers only to the primary founding peoples.
Deuteronomy 33:6 Let Reuben live, and not die; and let not his men be few.
Genesis 49:3 Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power: 49:4 Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed; then defiledst thou it: he went up to my couch.
Reuben is not to perish nor is Reuben to become an independent nation in his own right because of instability, yet Reuben is to have a large population in spite of being stateless.
The tribe of Reuben migrated from Palestine north into Scandinavia where they and other tribes traveling with them, became known as North Men [Normans] and separating from Naphtali and other tribes they then migrated southward and settled in Normandy, northern France.
Later most of Reuben migrated to Canada and became the Quebecois and many others migrated from France to Louisiana which became a part of the US.
While Lower Louisiana had been settled by French colonists since the late 17th century, the Cajuns trace their roots to the influx of Acadian settlers after the Great Expulsion from their homeland in Maritime Canada, during the French and British hostilities prior to the Seven Years’ War (1756 to 1763), In the USA those deported by Britain to Louisiana are called Cajuns [French les Acadiens] or Accadians.
Reuben makes up a substantial part of the populations of the United States and Canada with some possibly remaining in Normandy France.
Deuteronomy 33:7 And this is the blessing of Judah: and he said, Hear, LORD, the voice of Judah, and bring him unto his people: let his hands be sufficient for him; and be thou an help to him from his enemies.
Genesis 49:8 Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father’s children shall bow down before thee. 49:9 Judah is a lion’s whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up?
49:10 The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. 49:11 Binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass’s colt unto the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes: 49:12 His eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk.
Judah has always been identified as the Jews, however today many Jews do not identify themselves racially, but by an affiliation to Rabbinic Judaism.
Deuteronomy 33:8 And of Levi he said, Let thy Thummim and thy Urim be with thy holy one, whom thou didst prove at Massah, and with whom thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah;
33:9 Who said unto his father and to his mother, I have not seen him; neither did he acknowledge his brethren, nor knew his own children: for they have observed thy word, and kept thy covenant.
33:10 They shall teach Jacob thy judgments, and Israel thy law: they shall put incense before thee, and whole burnt sacrifice upon thine altar.
33:11 Bless, LORD, his substance, and accept the work of his hands; smite through the loins of them that rise against him, and of them that hate him, that they rise not again.
Levi was called out of the tribes of Israel to become the tribe of God, Therefore Levi is not considered to be one of the Ten Tribes but remained scattered in both Judah and in the Ten Tribes of Israel.
Levi and Simeon
Levi and Simeon were men of temper and were not to become nations, they were to be divided [scattered throughout] in the Ten tribes of Israel.
Genesis 49:5 Simeon and Levi are brethren; instruments of cruelty are in their habitations. 49:6 O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they slew a man, and in their selfwill they digged down a wall. 49:7 Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.
Benjamin was a war like people shedding much blood in Israel during the period of the Judges. Benjamin would remain attached to Judah and would not be considered to be one of the Ten Tribes of Israel, later – in the millennium – settling down and enjoying the riches of his inheritance, dwelling in a safe place.
Deuteronomy 33:12 And of Benjamin he said, The beloved of the LORD shall dwell in safety by him [Benjamin and Judah will dwell together]; and the Lord shall cover [protect] him all the day long, and he shall dwell between his shoulders.
When God rent the Ten Tribes from Rehoboam, Judah and Benjamin were left together.
Genesis 49:27 Benjamin shall ravin as a wolf: in the morning he shall devour the prey, and at night he shall divide the spoil
Joseph replaced Reuben as the first born, and was granted a double portion to become many nations.
Deuteronomy 33:13 And of Joseph he said, Blessed of the Lord be his land, for the precious things of heaven, for the dew, and for the deep that coucheth beneath [the riches under the land], 33:14 And for the precious fruits brought forth by the sun, and for the precious things put forth by the moon [blessings of great harvest from which came the wheat sheaf symbol], 33:15 And for the chief things of the ancient mountains, and for the precious things of the lasting hills [forestry, minerals and mining], 33:16 And for the precious things of the earth and fulness thereof, and for the good will of him that dwelt in the bush [God’s blessings and protection]: let the blessing come upon the head of Joseph, and upon the top of the head of him that was separated from his brethren.
33:17 His glory is like the firstling of his bullock, and his horns are like the horns of unicorns [H7214 meaning “his strong bull”; due to the influence of James 1, this was mistranslated as unicorns in 1611]: with them he shall push the people together to the ends of the earth: and they are the ten thousands of Ephraim, and they are the [many] thousands of Manasseh.
The term “strong bull” was deliberately mistranslated as “unicorn” by the king James translators, to insert the modern symbol of Scotland [unicorns] into the Bible, because he, a Scottish king, believed that he was a king of Israel from the line of David.
The richness of the British peoples are obvious and cannot be denied. They are truly descended from Joseph and have inherited these blessings. That does not mean that they are ruled by a monarch of the House of David today!
Joseph [The Anglo Saxon people are the British and American people] would fight many many wars, and receive mighty blessing of good things.
Genesis 49:22 Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall: 49:23 [They will have many enemies and much war, but will be blessed by God with great strength over their enemies] The archers have sorely grieved him, and shot at him, and hated him: 49:24 But his bow abode in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the mighty God of Jacob;
49:25 Even by the God of thy father [Abraham], who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb:
49:26 The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren.
Zebulun is to dwell by the sea and Issachar by the mountains.
Deuteronomy 33:18 And of Zebulun he said, Rejoice, Zebulun, in thy going out; and, Issachar, in thy tents. 33:19 They shall call the people unto the mountain [during the millennium they will call people to come to the Temple Mount]; there [at the Ezekiel Temple] they shall offer sacrifices of righteousness: for they shall suck of the abundance of the seas, and of treasures hid in the sand.
Genesis 49:13 Zebulun shall dwell at the haven of the sea; and he shall be for an haven of ships; and his border shall be unto Zidon.
Genesis 49:14 Issachar is a strong ass couching down between two burdens: 49:15 And he saw that rest was good, and the land that it was pleasant; and bowed his shoulder to bear, and became a servant unto tribute.
Gad will be overcome during the tribulation but at the coming of Messiah he will overcome and sincerely repent.
Deuteronomy 33:20 And of Gad he said, Blessed be he that enlargeth Gad: he dwelleth as a lion, and teareth the arm with the crown of the head.
33:21 And he provided the first part for himself, because there, in a portion of the lawgiver, was he seated; and he came with the heads of the people, he executed the justice of the LORD, and his judgments with Israel.
Genesis 49:19 Gad, a troop shall overcome him: but he shall overcome at the last.
Dan shall leap from Bashan [Mt Hermon or Golan], he shall have his own nation and shall vex his brothers. This is speaking of the Irish [Dan] fight for independence from the British [Ephraim].
The Patriarch Dan was born from the handmaid of Rachel, Bilhah. Rachel was in envy of her sister Leah. She wanted so badly to bear a child for Jacob, that she gave him her handmaid to bear a son. That son was Dan. When he was born she said, “God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son: therefore called she his name Dan.” (Gen 30:6). he meaning of the word “Dan” is “Judge” (Strong’s #1777 “judge”).
When Israel took possession of the promised land, the tribe of Dan was allotted its tribal inheritance in the South Western area of that land.. Dan was situated on the Mediterranean Sea, and included the busy port of Joppa, next to modern Tel-Aviv (Joshua 19:40-48).
Many Danes later left the land sailing from Joppa in ships while others migrated Northwards to Laish, and called the city Dan, after their father, see Judges 18. The northern city Laish, now called Dan, by the tribe of Dan, was about thirty miles inland from the ancient busy port of Tyre.
In the 1200’s B.C., before Dan went to Laish, in a song commemorating a great Israelite victory, the Judge Deborah lamented that during the battle, the “men of Gilead stayed beyond the Jordan [River], and [asked] why DAN REMAINED IN SHIPS?” (Judges 5:17).
Dan was divided into two halves as an early migration by ship to Ireland was later followed by a second migration from Laish after the Assyrian captivity, ending up in Denmark.
Ephraim [The British] has tried to dominate the western Irish half tribe of Dan which in return has vexed Ephraim, while the eastern Danish half tribe has been a peaceable nation.
Deutronomy 33:22 And of Dan he said, Dan is a lion’s whelp: he shall leap from Bashan.
Genesis 49:16 Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward.
Naphtali is to be known for wise words.
Deuteronomy 33:23 And of Naphtali he said, O Naphtali, satisfied with favour, and full with the blessing of the LORD: possess thou the west and the south [a Hebrewism for a long sea coast; Naphtali immigrated to Norway [the west] /Sweden [south of Norway] where he resides today].
Genesis 49:21 Naphtali is a hind let loose: he giveth goodly words.
Asher shall be strong all his day, be wealthy and have access to oil.
Deuteronomy 33:24 And of Asher he said, Let Asher be blessed with children; let him be acceptable to his brethren, and let him dip his foot in oil.
33:25 Thy shoes shall be iron and brass; and as thy days, so shall thy strength be.
Genesis 49:20 Out of Asher his bread shall be fat, and he shall yield royal dainties.
All Israel and their nations shall be blessed of the Eternal in the Kingdom of God.
Brethren, these prophecies are in part for now because God had promised these blessings to our forefathers, they are to be fulfilled in the Kingdom of God in their fullness, when all Israel repents and turns to the Eternal with a whole heart.
Jeshurun (Hebrew: יְשֻׁרוּן), in the Hebrew Bible, is a poetic name for Israel, derived from a root word meaning upright, just or straight. Jeshurun appears four times in the Hebrew Bible — three times in Deuteronomy and once in Isaiah. It can mean the people of Israel (Deut. 32:15; 33:26), the Land of Israel (Deut. 33:5;), or the Patriarch Jacob (whom an Angel renamed Israel in Genesis 32:29):
Deuteronomy 33:26 There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun, who rideth upon the heaven in thy help, and in his excellency on the sky.
33:27 The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.
33:28 Israel then shall dwell in safety alone: the fountain of Jacob shall be upon a land of corn and wine; also his heavens shall drop down dew.
33:29 Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy excellency! and thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and thou shalt tread upon their high places.
