After the healing of the demonic near Gadara, they returned by ship to Capernaum.
Matthew 9:1 And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city.
9:2 And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee.
This event is also covered more extensively by Mark.
Mark 2:1 And again he entered into Capernaum after some days; and it was noised that he was in the house.
2:2 And straightway many were gathered together, insomuch that there was no room to receive them, no, not so much as about the door: and he preached the word unto them.
2:3 And they come unto him, bringing one sick of the palsy, which was borne of four.
2:4 And when they could not come nigh unto him for the press, they uncovered the roof where he was: and when they had broken it up, they let down the bed wherein the sick of the palsy lay.
2:5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.
By forgiving sin Jesus revealed that he had the power to heal physically, which physical healing is an allegory of spiritually healing from sin. Christ said “thy sins be forgiven thee”; thus revealing that he was the Creator; for only God can forgive sin, as was clearly understood by the scribes.
Matthew 9:3 And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth.
9:4 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? 9:5 For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? 9:6 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. 9:7 And he arose, and departed to his house.
Christ openly tells them that he had the power to forgive sin; to heal the spirit as well as the flesh. This amounted to a claim of being the Messiah the Christ. The people rejoiced and the leaders saw Jesus as a competitor and challenge to their leadership; just as religious leaders see any zeal for living by every Word of God as competition against their supposed authority today.
9:8 But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.
Matthew the tax collector is called to be a disciple and apostle.
9:9 And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.
At this point Mathew was added to the disciples as one of the twelve. Then as Jesus sat to eat in Peter’s mother’s house in Capernaum, sinful people came to him to hear his teachings. So it will be when Christ comes as King of kings and all nations and peoples will seek out God’s Salvation.
9:10 And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.
Here Jesus does not condemn medicine but plainly uses the metaphor of the physician treating physical maladies as a reference to the Great Spiritual Physician, Jesus Christ; healing our spiritual sins.
9:11 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners? 9:12 But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.
God does not want sacrifices over and over for continual repeated sins; God calls us to sincere repentance from sins and God will forgive us for those past sincerely repented sins and apply the sacrifice of the Lamb of God to us; yet we are also commanded to: “Go and sin no more”!
In short God wants sincere repentance and demands that we STOP the sinning that brought the need for such a tremendous sacrifice. Those who teach that Jesus will tolerate continuing and wilfully repeating sin are spiritually ignorant or liars! We are called OUT of sin, not called to remain in the Egypt of bondage to sin!
9:13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
Christ was now beginning to make a point of reaching out to the sinful and the despised in that society.
9:14 Then came to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not? 9:15 And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.
9:16 No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse. 9:17 Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.
As the new wine cannot be put in an old container; God’s Spirit cannot be placed in the old sinful man. A person must repent and become a new person dedicated to God and his commandments; before God will give the gift of the indwelling of his Spirit. For the nature of God cannot coexist with sin and the rebellious nature of Satan.
The sinful person MUST sincerely repent of their sins and stop breaking the commandments!
Anyone who teaches tolerance for sin, or compromises with God’s law; has not yet repented of breaking that law; and cannot receive God’s Spirit. He is a WOLF in the flock!
A great falling away has taken place in the Church of God and all its major groups, and we do not even realize it!
We have gone from the zeal of first love for God; into a lax, lukewarm, complacent,. compromising attitude towards the things of God, as we turn away from the power of God and do what we want, instead of what God has commanded.
9:18 While he spake these things unto them, behold, there came a certain ruler, and worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.
Such amazing faith! Where is our faith that we cannot even proclaim a message of warning and repentance for fear of the ungodly, or out of a desire to impress the wicked and have them follow us; instead of teaching them to follow the whole Word of God?
9:19 And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples.
And as they were walking:
9:20 And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: 9:21 For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. 9:22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.
These incidents display the awesome power of Christ and what that can do when coupled with the repentant FAITH of the believer.
9:23 And when Jesus came into the ruler’s house, and saw the minstrels and the people making a noise [Wailing in mourning], 9:24 He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. 9:25 But when the people were put forth, he went in, and took her by the hand, and the maid arose.
The father had faith and he was the responsible party. The others had no faith and were driven out.
This is somewhat the Ekklesia; those of faith will trust and follow Christ; and Christ will raise them from the grave of death; those who do not have faith will laugh the zealous to scorn and except they repent they shall have NO part in the resurrection to spirit..
In the end, it is those of faith, married to the works of zealously following the Word of God, who will be the chosen at the resurrection of first fruits.
Mark 5:35 While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further? 5:36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.
5:37 And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.
5:38 And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. 5:39 And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.
5:40 And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying. 5:41 And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.
5:42 And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment. 5:43 And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.
Matthew 9:26 And the fame hereof went abroad into all that land.
After hearing of the dead raised to life, two blind men cry out for mercy.
This is an analogy that when Christ comes to the earth to rule; the spiritually blind of this world will seek the light of the knowledge of God, and they will be spiritually healed; their spiritual eyes and understanding being opened!
9:27 And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou son of David, have mercy on us. 9:28 And when he was come into the house, the blind men came to him: and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto him, Yea, Lord. 9:29 Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. 9:30 And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it. 9:31 But they, when they were departed, spread abroad his fame in all that country.
Now Jesus casts out a demon; revealing that he has power over even the wicked spirits.
9:32 As they went out, behold, they brought to him a dumb man possessed with a devil. 9:33 And when the devil was cast out, the dumb spake: and the multitudes marvelled, saying, It was never so seen in Israel.
At this point the jealousy of the religious establishment becomes very clearly visible. So it is today, as the people are split into group after group with many seeking the Chief Seats and personal leadership, being jealous for the chief offices.
They have something in common with each other in that they all want followings after themselves and are jealous of any zeal for the Word of God. They attack any zeal for God’s Word, demanding that the people follow them as idols of men, instead of being zealous to follow God’s Word. They condemn any zeal to keep the Word of God and teach zeal for themselves instead!
9:34 But the Pharisees said, He casteth out devils through the prince of the devils.
This will be covered in Matthew 12.
9:35 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. 9:36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.
This is like the world today. There are a great many who are seeking righteousness and peace, but are unable to find it. Many false teachers have come to lead the world’s [and the Ekklesia] peoples after themselves.
The final false prophet will occupy the papacy and will be able to deceive many because he appears to fill the need and desire of the nations for a secure peace and happiness, with a solution to the world’s problems. Now the world is almost ready for the harvest, with great masses of people looking for salvation from all their troubles.
In the next few years this longing will intensify as the world lurches from crisis to crisis and the people will be humbled to accept the only source of salvation.
Then the harvest will be ripe and ready for the coming of the Lamb of God with his saints. then God’s Spirit will be poured out on all flesh (Joel 2:28); and the laborers [early first fruits] will be ready to bring in the harvest into the family of God!
9:37 Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; 9:38 Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.
The Lord of the harvest is God the Father who calls out his laborers! Pray that God will call many into the collective bride of Christ, and that she will be perfected and made suitable for the marriage of the Lamb!
Brethren, we are NOT called to rule as this world’s leaders rule, like the god-king of Egypt ruled! We are called as servants and laborers of God to bring in the harvest of humanity into the Temple and Family of God!
