Matthew 5

Matthew 5:1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: 5:2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying,

5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Poor in spirit: a) humble, lacking in pride the lowly and humble of the world.

The poor in spirit are the humble before God who are teachable and obedient to their Father in heaven, just as little children trust, seek knowledge from and are eager to please their parents. The poor in spirit are those who are contrite of spirit, with their pride and self-centered sinful natures crushed out to fine powder [contrition] and blown away in the breeze.

Psalm 34:18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Psalm 51:15 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. 51:16 For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

It is the lowly of spirit who do not exalt themselves but seek their God will all their heart, who shall inherit the Kingdom of God. The high minded who seek to exalt themselves and love the chief seats in this life, will NOT inherit the Kingdom of God.

Beware you shepherds who seek personal advantage and the chief places! You have your reward now.

Matthew 5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Those who mourn and cry and sigh over all the evils of the day will be comforted for they shall be exalted and they shall enter into the Kingdom of Righteousness.

God’s angel is singling out those who love God enough to zealously keep HIS Word and who mourn over the wickedness in this world and in today’s spiritual Ekklesia; who teach the brethren to follow idols of men and who rebuke any zeal to follow the Word of God; who call the Sabbaths holy and then openly justify polluting them.

Ezekiel 9:4 And the LORD said unto him, Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof.

Once the zealous and faithful are marked out [removed], then the remainder who have rejected any zeal to keep the whole Word of God will be rejected by Christ and cast into the furnace of affliction and correction; where the flesh will be afflicted to save the spirit (Rev 3:15-22).

9:5 And to the others he said in mine hearing, Go ye after him through the city, and smite: let not your eye spare, neither have ye pity: 9:6 Slay utterly old and young, both maids, and little children, and women: but come not near any man upon whom is the mark; and begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the ancient [those who think themselves wise] men which were before the house

Beginning with the elders of the house [the spiritual temple, the Ekklesia] God will correct all those who do not hate evil and do not love God enough to zealously live by every Word of God.  Loving “the corporate church” and false leaders; more than they love the Word of God many have been deceived into thinking that following men away from God, instead of fully following God; is the same as following God.

This is the correction of Laodicea (Rev 3); which will be corrected as were those who did not love God’s Word in the past.

Matthew 5:5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Psalm 25:9 The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way. 25:10 All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies.

Those who are meek [humble] before God, he will save; for they do God’s will and keep his Covenant to live by every Word of God.

Psalm 149:4 For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation.

Matthew 5:6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

Those who are consumed with zeal for the righteousness of every Word of God, will be filled to overflowing with the Holy Spirit of righteousness.

5:7  Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Mark 11:25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. 11:26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

We are to be pure and undefiled, without guile or deceit.

Anyone who takes a small part of the truth and spins it to change the entire meaning of the whole truth, is a false witness and filled with guile, seeking to deceive: He IS a LIAR in the spirit and intent of the law.

This also goes to the subject of hypocrisy; of saying one thing and doing another. Such men will not see God in the first resurrection of the chosen; unless they repent.

5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

We are called to help reconcile men to God by preaching a message of warning and repentance; by proclaiming the Good News that man can receive salvation through sincere repentance, the application of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and faith in God, married to the works of keeping God’s Word and doing God’s will.  In doing this we help to bring peace between people and God.

5:10 Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

All of those who are filled with the righteousness of God; which is living by every Word of God: Will be persecuted from within and from without the assemblies.

Satan will first pressure one from without to tire him of enduring; then he will persecute from within by labeling the godly righteous as “over-righteous,” self-righteous or Pharisaical; finally if all else fails he will cause the lukewarm to drive out the righteous from the organizations and then attack them using every possible means to attempt to destroy the zeal of the righteous.

If we try to avoid trials by compromising with God’s Word; we offend God and we will face God’s wrath!

John 15:20 Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

Matthew 5:11 Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

The key here is “falsely”. If we are persecuted and condemned for faithful zeal for God and his Word, then we have earned a rich reward from God our Father. On the other hand if we compromise with God’s Word and become a bad example, being then properly criticized for our wickedness; we have  earned the correction of God.

5:12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.

There is no person of God who has not seen trials and persecution, because their zeal and faith convicts the worldly of sin.

It is the example of passionate obedience to God the Father which excites such persecution from those who’s conscience is being pricked, for they reject living by every Word of God through their compromising and rebellion to follow their own ways, even as they claim to be godly; which is hypocrisy and self-deception.

John 15:21 But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me. 15:22 If I had not come and spoken unto them, they had not had sin: but now they have no cloak for their sin.

Matthew 5:13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

The zeal and faithful obedience of the passionate followers of God is the SALT which makes the earth with all its evils endurable for God; until the time of mankind’s sincere repentance and the  restoration of God’s rule over all humanity.

It is our faithful obedience which sets us as a great light upon a hilltop; which makes us tasteful, desirable and acceptable to God.

If we begin to compromise and turn away from passionate zeal for God our Father and for our espoused Husband, God our Father and every Word of God; we have lost our savor and our light flickers out as we become just another worldly person. Then we will be rejected by our Maker as unfit, as per the above and Revelation 3.

5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Our light comes through the Holy Spirit of God within us. If we are filled with God’s Spirit and he is dwelling within us; we will be doing what Christ did; we will be filled with Christ-like passion for God the Father to live by every Word of God. That will make us STAND OUT from the wicked and from the lax and lukewarm in a manner that cannot be hid.

The Spirit of God is the very nature of God the Father and the Son, which cannot be hid, unless we quench that Spirit and refuse to follow it in becoming LIKE God; DOING as God DOES, LIVING as God LIVES..

5:15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Be passionately zealous for God and his will and his Word so that the light of the very nature of God may shine brightly in us! Ultimately when they are humbled, the rest of mankind will acknowledge the greatness of God and our zeal for him, and they will glorify God.

5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Christ came to keep and complete the Word of God by revealing the spirit and intent of God’s Word, making it full; and making it binding in both the letter and in the spirit!  Christ did NOT come to destroy his Father’s Word, but to reveal its spiritual intent: and to set an example that we are to follow; zealously keeping the Whole Word of God in the letter and in the spirit and in the full intent!

5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

No part of God the Father’s Word will  ever pass away, and ultimately all living people will be passionately living by every Word of God in BOTH the letter and the spirit. Then the law and Word of God will be written on the hearts of people and not on tables of stone (Jeremiah 31).

5:19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

If anyone says that this or that is just physical, or is only a “little thing;” consider these words. Indeed, to break the law in one point, is to break the whole law, therefore such a person will not even be in God’s Kingdom unless he repents, then he will be accounted least. Many, who think they are great now, may not even be chosen, or will be accounted least in the Kingdom of God.

5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees [who made God’s Word of no effect by their false traditions of men], ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

To be a Pharisee is to make the law of God of no effect by following our idols of men and our own false traditions; to be zealous for our own ways and not for God’s ways; to exalt men, the false traditions of men and organizations instead of being totally faithful to God and his Word; to have a pretense of godliness without the power [the true Spirit] of godliness; and to serve with the lips and not with deeds; to be filled with guile, deceit and hypocrisy.

Those who would be pillars of godliness must be zealous for God and doers of his Word, no matter what the cost; or they will NOT be in the resurrection of the called out first fruits to eternal life.

God wants to save those he calls to himself and he wants to reward them with eternal life and a resurrection to spirit, but Satan wants to prevent that and will persecute and destroy the flesh of those faithful to Almighty God who seek to live by every Word of God

5:21 Ye have heard that it was said of them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

The second great commandment is to love our neighbors and to treat them as we would be treated. We will be forgiven only as we forgive others.

If we lose our zeal for godliness, the salt of our example will lose its savor to God.

Our light is diminished and our salt has lost its savor before God; if we are selfish for our own ways and false traditions and follow idols of men; and if we are lukewarm for the commandments and instructions of the Word of God.  If we love our corporate “churches”  MORE than we LOVE to live by every Word of God, we have lost our savor before God!

Brethren, these instructions of Christ have the weight of God’s law! They are instruction from our espoused Husband as to how HE expects us to behave!

5:23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;

5:24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

We are not even to give an offering to God while we have a dispute with others, but we are to make an effort to resolve that dispute first (Mat 18):

Matthew 9:13 But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice:

If we cannot learn how to forgive others and get along now, how will we get along for eternity? These things are eternal!

Matthew 5:25 Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

Consider whether your adversary in the faith will go to God the Father for judgment because of our sin.   Be very careful within yourself as to how you treat others in and outside the faith; for God the Father will hold all accountable for their obedience to these instructions.  And if there is a problem remember the wisdom of Matthew 18.

5:26 Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing.

God is a fair but just judge and he will require every last “jot” of his law to be obeyed.

No unrepented or hidden sin will be allowed to slip by. ONLY repented sin is covered and forgiven by God, and repented sin is that which we have committed to stop doing. No sin that we are not diligently trying to stop will be covered by the sacrifice of Christ; no compromising with any part of God’s Word will be tolerated.

This teaching that sin should be tolerated out of love for the sinner is a doctrine of Satan! For it prevents true repentance and sets the sinner on the highway to perdition.

The ONLY way to love the sinner is to warn him of his sin and encourage him to turn AWAY from that sin.

5:27 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:

5:28 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

This is difficult in the translation, as the word is Pornea and means sexual impropriety or disloyalty of any kind. This word pornea translated as adultery also means fornication, homosexuality and ANY form of sexual error; either physically or emotionally or spiritually.  If we love others more than we love our spouse we are guilty of emotional adultery.

Disloyalty and sexual sin of all kinds are a major problem in the world today and going way back through history.

5:29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

This is an example, instructing us that we should allow nothing to come between us and God. If we are willing to pluck out an eye, certainly we would be willing to give up restaurants on Sabbath. This is about passionate zeal for God’s Word and is not about literally maiming oneself.

5:30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

It is for breaking and compromising with God’s Word that the unrepentant wicked will be cast into Gehenna. It is time we woke up to that fact, and sought the Lord our God with all our hearts while there is time.

5:31 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: 5:32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication [Any kind of disloyalty including abandonment of the spouse; or spiritual adultery against Christ by abandoning the faith; any habitual sin including beating a spouse, is spiritual adultery against Christ and rebellion against the Word of God.  Those who habitually sin are to be cast out of the assemblies.], causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

The twisting of this scripture has caused problems. The word rendered “fornication” is pornea which means ANY kind of sexual impropriety or disloyalty: Including adultery and homosexuality. This is not an exclusive matter of marriage fraud as some claim,  this is about ANY type of marital infidelity.

According to Christ: The ONLY grounds for divorce is marital infidelity, [annulment can be made for a fraudulent marriage only if there is NO intercourse AFTER the fraud is discovered], which would include abandonment according to Paul.

If you are having troubles separate a few days and then come back together to resolve the matter; get a neutral mediator if necessary.

Divorce WITHIN the faith is FORBIDDEN, as it is sin; for it is a refusal to repent or to forgive [BOTH being sin] by the parties.

In the same vein Paul’s adds the phrase “willing to dwell in peace”

The person who consistently and unrepentedly beats or abuses his/her spouse is the same as an adulterer in that he/she is living in sin and violating their marriage vows; NOT faithfully loving their mate. They are to be rejected from the assemblies.

Spiritually if we do something that Christ says is sin, because a corporate church says it’s all right: WE ARE MORAL AND SPIRITUAL ADULTERERS! and Jesus Christ WILL reject us!  Jesus Christ will reject us for our spiritual adultery in straying from obedience, and loving others more than we love him and God the Father.

5:33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: 5:34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne: 5:35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. 5:36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. 5:37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

Be honest and straightforward in all your communicating, then there will be no need to swear to the correctness and truth of an utterance.

5:38 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: 5:39 But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

There will come a time when God’s servants WILL fight. The time is not yet and in this dispensation we need to learn to submit to the authority of this world’s powers. The ultimate authority is that of God the Father and he has allowed Satan to rule this world until a new government is qualified to replace him.

We must learn under this harsh task master so that we can become good rulers knowing right from wrong in the coming Kingdom of God. By experiencing harsh ways, we will understand the consequence and the evil of those ways.

For now, we must let God use these evils to temper and train us like a master potter creates a new thing of beauty. In short God is using the trials of this time to teach and prepare us; to smooth our rough edges, and to create a collective bride fit to share the Kingdom of God!

Quite simply we lack power and the authority because this world is not our own. On the day that Christ comes with ten thousands of his saints (Jude), they WILL fight,  in righteousness at the direct command of Jesus Christ.

John 18:36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

Matthew 5:40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also.

Brethren, are not to sue other brethren.

I can see where a defense might be needed against spurious lawsuits made by unconverted persons who seek to extort, but consider whether it is seemly for saints to seek judgment against each other from this Satan controlled world. It is a disgrace when the saints cannot settle their own disputes and must go to “Satan” for relief.

5:41 And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain.

This is in reference to being compelled by lawful authority; in this case the Roman mail service. Obey the lawful governmental authority as long as it does not conflict with God’s law.

5:42 Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.

This is a reference to God’s commandments, we are to give to the needy for their life’s needs, according to our ability, and we are to consider that gift as an offering made to God, not seeking repayment, for God will repay.

This is NOT a reference to supporting any business, or to support the lazy; but is intended to help the genuinely needy with life preserving needs, as we are able; while still fulfilling our own responsibilities to our families and creditors.

5:43 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; 5:45 That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

Consider that Christ gave his life for those which despised him, and he says that he will welcome and comfort those which hated him ignorantly. That is awesome true spiritual WISDOM. Why? Because at some point they WILL understand what they have done and they will repent seeking forgiveness.

By fighting with enemies now, we put a stumbling block on their future repentance. We need to teach repentance from sin and obedience to God, and we MUST also set a Godly Example of a better way. We should never hate others in return for being hated.

The only way to return good for evil is to take the long term approach and understand the love and forgiveness that God has for us.

Remember that we have ALL sinned and made our mistakes, remember how very much God has loved us and forgiven us; then we can begin to forgive others as he has forgiven us.

Zechariah 12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

Matthew 5:46 For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? 5:47 And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so?

5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Jesus Christ encourages us to become like God our Father and to be perfect as HE is perfect. It is the WILL of Jesus Christ that we become like God the Father in heaven!

To do that, we must live by every Word of God the Father with Christ-like zeal: NO compromise, NO complacency, No tolerance for sin [which is rebellion against the WILL of God the Father], NO lukewarmness: ONLY a Christ-like passion for God the Father and the whole Word of God.

ONLY when the Father calls us and we sincerely REPENT of our rebellion and commandment breaking, can we be justified by the application of Christ’s sacrifice! And ONLY if we then make a clear baptismal commitment of obedience to God the Father, can we enter into an espousal agreement with Christ and be given the precious gift of God’s indwelling Spirit to empower us to keep our commitment to live by every Word of God.

It is Christ dwelling in us that enables us to overcome sin! Our job is to follow his lead at all times!

Revelation 14:4 These are they which were not defiled with women [false religions, and false teachings of men]; for they are [faithful to our espoused Husband and keep his full will, following him wherever he goes and keeping whatever he says:  NOT with lip-service only, but in both words and deeds!] virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.
