Jesus gave the twelve special disciples [which included Judas] power over demons and to heal the sick and instructed then NOT to build up earthly wealth but to live frugally off the Gospel.
Luke 9:1 Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. 9:2 And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. 9:3 And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece.
9:4 And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and depart [until you go to continue preaching in the next city].
The Gospel or warning, Repentance and Salvation is to be preached to all peoples and those who reject the message will have been witnessed to and their blood will be upon their own heads if they reject the warnings.
Jesus Christ has made ALL his disciples to be watchmen, as he made Ezekiel a watchman;
We are all to do our part as God gives us opportunity, to preach the Gospel as a warning and a witness to all men, and as watchmen to warn the nations; as Christ did.
Exodus 33:7 So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me. 33:8 When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. 33:9 Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.
ALL disciples of Christ have a commission from him to be watchmen and proclaimers of the Gospel of warning, repentance, obedience, the way to salvation and the judgment to come.
It is so sad that we neither teach the Gospel in its fullness to others, nor do we obey the teachings of Christ ourselves.
Matthew 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Luke 9:5 And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them. 9:6 And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where.
9:7 Now Herod the tetrarch [Ruler of a quarter; Herod Antipas became ruler of Galilee after the death of Herod the Great, when the Christ child was in Egypt.] heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead; 9:8 And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again. 9:9 And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him.
The twelve report back
9:10 And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 9:11 And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.
The feeding of the five thousand
9:12 And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place.9:13 But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people.
9:14 For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company. 9:15 And they did so, and made them all sit down.
This feeding of the people with bread is a lesson that Jesus Christ is the true Bread of Life; the source of our physical lives by creation, and the source of salvation and life eternal!
9:16 Then he took the five loaves [pita rounds] and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude. 9:17 And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.
Jesus seeks to know what his disciples think of him, and if they understand who he is.
9:18 And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am? 9:19 They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again. 9:20 He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God.
Jesus commanded his disciples NOT to say that he was the Christ [The Anointed Deliverer] until the time was right.
9:21 And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing; 9:22 Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.
If we want to follow Christ; we must make a lifelong commitment to live by every Word of God and to KEEP all of his teachings and commandments whatever the cost; forever!
9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross [burden] daily, and follow me.
Anyone that seeks to reduce persecution or trials by compromising with the Word, commandments and teachings of God the Father and Jesus Christ will lose his eternal life! Anyone who teaches tolerance for sin or compromising even a little bit with the teachings and commandments of God the Father and Jesus Christ is damned to destruction, unless he sincerely REPENTS!!!
But he who will give all he has for that pearl of great value; who will not hold back or turn aside from godliness, even in the face of losing everything physical including his physical life: SHALL be raised up and given eternal life by the Lamb of God!
So many have forgotten the teachings of Christ and have taught a FALSE CHRIST, who willingly overlooks unrepented sin!
9:24 For whosoever will save his [physical] life shall lose it [shall lose his eternal life]: but whosoever will lose [Give up his physical life] his life for my sake, the same shall save it [Shall receive eternal life as spirit] . 9:25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
To lose or give up one’s life is about far more than physically dying; it is also about giving up one’s own ways to diligently keep and submit to the whole Word of God; it is about giving up our own ways and LIVING a Christ-like life!
If we do not KEEP Christ’s words; if we are ashamed to be an example of KEEPING Christ’s words: He SHALL REJECT US!
9:26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.
Jesus then speaks of the coming vision of transfiguration.
9:27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
9:28 And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray. 9:29 And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering.
Moses and Elijah are revealed as the two who stand with Jesus Christ, the Lord of all the earth.
Zechariah 4:14 Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth.
Luke 9:30 And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: 9:31 Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem.
The apostles fell asleep and did not see the beginning of the vision or hear the words being discussed about the coming crucifixion. They awoke at the end of the vision to see the glory of Christ and these two men.
9:32 But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.
9:33 And it came to pass, as they [the vision departed] departed from him, Peter [confused by just awakening] said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said.
The existence of God the Father is again revealed from heaven as at the baptism of Jesus.
9:34 While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud. 9:35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him.
9:36 And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone [the vision ended and Moses and Elijah were gone]. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen.
9:37 And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.
The need for faith in God in order to do the works of Godliness
9:38 And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child. 9:39 And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him. 9:40 And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.
9:41 And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither. 9:42 And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.
The apostles and disciples being impressed by the great power of Jesus, still did NOT understand that Jesus must be crucified
9:43 And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples, 9:44 Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men. 9:45 But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.
Politics rears its ugly head as it has done down through the centuries and most viciously in today’s Ekklesia. The ambitious tares rise to the top in the organizations; while the faithful zealous for God; are side lined, marginalized and trampled over in the rise of false teachers who God allows for the purpose of TESTING his people, whether they will be faithful to HIM, or whether they will follow the traditions of men.
Deuteronomy 13:3 . . . . for the Lord your God proveth [tests] you, to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
Luke 9:46 Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.
Jesus then taught them that to be the greatest they must be as humble, teachable and obedient as a young child before God. And whoever receives the humble and obedient to God; receives Christ and God the Father into their homes.
9:47 And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him, 9:48 And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.
Christ teaches us NOT to be jealous of others, but to serve God as HE leads us.
9:49 And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us. 9:50 And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.
The Samaritans [the modern Palestinians; who were brought in from Mesopotamia by the Assyrians and given the land north of Jerusalem by God (2 Kings 17)]; reject Christ because he was going up to the Jerusalem of their enemies, the Jews.
9:51 And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, 9:52 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. 9:53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem.
The ministry of Messiah was to save and not to destroy, but ultimately he will destroy all of the unrepentant wicked.
9:54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? 9:55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. 9:56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
Jesus says that he has no home to teach us that the converted person is not part of this present world but is seeking a new world
9:57 And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. 9:58 And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
There is NOTHING that is so important that we should allow it to come between us and our unwavering dedication to live in Christ-like zeal to passionately keep every Word of God the Father.
9:59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 9:60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.
9:61 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
No one who makes a baptismal commitment to follow Christ and then compromises with Christ’s teachings and commandments and turns aside for any reason; is fit to be a part of the bride of the Lamb!
9:62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
Jesus as the Husband of Israel (Jer 31:32) gave Moses seventy elders [the Sanhedrin] to help him. The Great Sanhedrin of the Seventy with the leader making 71 was restored by Ezra after the Babylonian captivity and has been called the Sanhedrin [The Assembly] since that time. Since Ezra, Lesser Sanhedrin’s of twenty or so existed in all the major towns and referred matters too hard for them to the Great Sanhedrin in Jerusalem.
Seventy evangelists were chosen by Christ and sent out to prepare the way and spread the word.
Luke 10:1 After these things the LORD appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.
10:2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest [God the Father], that he would send forth [call out many] labourers into his harvest.
10:3 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. 10:4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. 10:5 And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. 10:6 And if the son of peace [if the household be peaceable to you] be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.
If they are rejected they were to leave and go elsewhere. If possible they were to stay in one place so that they could be easily found by the people, and they are commanded to live off the contributions of the people.
10:7 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house. 10:8 And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you: 10:9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.
Woe unto those who WILL NOT hear or accept the warning message of repentance and the way of salvation.
10:10 But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say, 10:11 Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. 10:12 But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom, than for that city. 10:13 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon, which have been done in you, they had a great while ago repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.
10:14 But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment, than for you. 10:15 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell.
Those who teach men to tolerate sin, or that Christ is love and will overlook unrepented sin; ignorantly despise Christ’s teachings and commandments!
They teach against Christ and against God the Father and despise Christ and God the Father by their rejection of loving dedicated unwavering zeal to live by every Word of God. Some are worse than the wicked who know no better, because they had once been converted and are supposed to know better!
10:16 He that heareth you [hears the true disciples] heareth me; and he that despiseth you [the faithfull followers and KEEPERS of all of Christ’s teachings and commandments] despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me.
The seventy report back
10:17 And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name.
Jesus says here that he was in the beginning before the creation of man; for he declares that he beheld when Satan was cast down.
10:18 And he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven.
The truly faithfully obedient to Christ, who willingly and eagerly internalize the very nature of God by the KEEPING of ALL the teachings and commandments of Christ and God the Father, will be imbued with the power to do good that comes from Christ and God the Father!
10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
Performing miracles and numbers of followers or great wealth is nothing.
It is the true sound doctrine of Holy Scripture, and our faithfulness and obedience to our Master which is the foundation of our faith that our names are indeed registered in heaven as a part of the bride of the Lamb.
10:20 Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
God’s true wisdom is revealed to babes in worldliness. Let us cast off our worldliness and our coveting of the pleasures of this society and turn to the Mighty One who ALONE can save us!
God the Father and Christ reveal themselves to whoever they choose. It is NOT up to us to be concerned about numbers following our corporate entities. It is up to us to proclaim the warning message to ALL peoples and let God the Father call out and work with whoever HE chooses!
10:21 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the [worldly] wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes [in worldliness]: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight. 10:22 All things are delivered to me of my Father: and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father; and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.
Jesus explained the spirit and intent of the law and of the prophets regarding salvation.
10:23 And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see: 10:24 For I tell you, that many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
The way to eternal life
10:25 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? 10:26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? 10:27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.
10:28 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.
God comes FIRST; because God’s commandments reveal the true way to love God and to love our neighbor.
Self-justifying sins against our neighbor is CONDEMNED by JESUS CHRIST!
10:29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour? 10:30 And Jesus answering said, . . .
The Parable of the Good Samaritan [Most Samaritans were converted to Islam in the Middle Ages and are now called Palestinians].
. . . A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.
10:31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 10:32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.
10:33 But a certain Samaritan [today a Palestinian], as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, 10:34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 10:35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.
The lawyer could not say that the sinner was more righteous then the priest or Levite, so he merely said: “He that shewed mercy on him.”
We are to show kindness, even to our enemies! How is it that this doctrine of Christ has been forgotten in practice by so many?
10:36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? 10:37 And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.
To learn the things of God is the FIRST and MOST IMPORTANT PRIORITY for his elect!
Why do we work so hard to obtain the things of this world which perish; and yet we are so lax about learning and DOING the things of God?
Why do we exalt men who die, organizations that perish away; and false traditions that are meaningless false idols above any zeal for our Mighty God?
10:38 Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. 10:39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. 10:40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
This lesson from Martha and Mary is about priorities. We should serve God and learn the things of God as our FIRST priority and then serve in physical things second. With the very WORD of God in her parlor, Martha was more concerned about the physical things than about sitting at the feet of the Messiah to learn from him, and Jesus gently corrected her.
10:41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 10:42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
