The book of Haggai is addressed directly to Zerubbabel the governor of Judea and to Joshua the high priest to encourage them to resume building the temple after the work had stopped due to local resistance.  Haggai being God’s messenger to the governor and the high priest regarding the building of the temple.

This book is dual being a message to the builders of the temple at that time and a message to the end time builders of the spiritual temple of the Called Out as the dwelling place of God through the Holy Spirit, who are preparing the bride of Christ for the resurrection to spirit to become fully UNITED with God the Father and Jesus Christ at the marriage of the Lamb.

The prophecy was written during the restoration period when repentant people were returning from captivity to build the temple of God, as a shadow of the events concerning building and preparing the spiritual temple of the people of God; leading up to and including the coming of Christ to build the physical Ezekiel Temple.

The prophecy rebukes and admonishes the  people for neglecting their duty to be building the temple and is also an instruction for us today.

Haggai called on the people to sincerely  repent  and to fulfill their duty which was to build the physical temple; similarly today’s Spiritual Ekklesia is being called to sincerely repent and build ourselves into a spiritual temple through internalizing and living by every Word of God!

The book of Haggai is a picture of today’s Spiritual Ekklesia, who are fixated on themselves and doing what they think is right instead of building ourselves up into a pure spiritual temple of the whole Word of God, in which God can dwell through his Spirit.

The serious issues of marrying the unconverted which in the spiritual sense means mixing true religion with the false traditions of men and Sabbath breaking, dealt with in the book of Haggai, are highly relevant for today’s Spiritual Ekklesia which is full of these same sins.

Haggai, Ezra and Nehemiah cover a period of the building of the physical temple, the city and the restoration of true religion; and are prophetic of the need to build, cleanse and purify ourselves, to become a part of the true Ekklesia; the true spiritual temple of God

These books are vital instructions for us today and we should be about the vitally important business of preparing to become a part of  the collective bride of Christ, and preparing for the soon coming Kingdom of God.   Today’s Spiritual Ekklesia needs to clean up our act and to make ourselves spiritually ONE in full UNITY with our LORD!

When an elder says that these books are only a history of a revival for that time, and rejects the corrections in them; he simply does NOT know what he is talking about.

The very same kind of revival is desperately needed for us today in our time!

ALL scriptures is written for us and for our instruction.

2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:  3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

Brethren, if we do not bow to the reproofs of Holy Scripture we are NOT God’s servants; and we will not have a part in the spiritual bride and spiritual temple of God through his Spirit.

If we do not restore true religion in ourselves and our assemblies today; how can we expect to be in the resurrection to spirit and have a part in restoring true religion to all Israel [and all humanity], and help to bring a vast expansion and conversion of first fruits throughout the millennium, completing the seventh day of the first fruits harvest?

Zerubbabel is identified as the governor, while Joshua is identified as the High Priest.  When he comes, Jesus Christ will be both King of kings [governor]  and High Priest, therefore these two offices will be united in one office and these two persons are BOTH types of the coming Christ.

Haggai 1

After Daniel was delivered from the lions den, Darius made this decree.

Daniel 6:25  Then king Darius wrote unto all people, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth; Peace be multiplied unto you.

6:26  I make a decree, That in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel: for he is the living God, and stedfast for ever, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed, and his dominion shall be even unto the end.

6:27  He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions.

Then in the second year of Darius about 520 B.C. Haggai encouraged the people to resume building the temple. At that time a letter was sent to Darius and upon finding the original edict of Cyrus he was quick to order the building of the temple to resume, without doubt having been influenced by the deliverance of Daniel.

Haggai 1:1 In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying,

The Being who later gave up his Godhood to become flesh as Jesus Christ inspired Haggai to rebuke the people for caring about their own selves and not for building the temple according to the decree of Cyrus.

This rebuke is entirely appropriate for today’s brethren!

Today, physical and spiritual Israel are both full of their own ways and they have left off and neglected any zeal to build themselves into a  spiritual House of God through a zeal to internalize and live by every Word of God.

1:2 Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD’s house should be built.

Today the called out are intent on things like income and numbers and have forgotten the priority to which they were called; which is to build themselves into a spiritual temple, a fit dwelling place for the Holy Spirit of God; by zealously internalizing the whole Word of God through living by EVERY WORD of God.

Today we are content to sit back and follow idols of men, exalting them above the Word of God.  That is what the Sabbath and Calendar issues are about; will we obey God; or will we obey idols of men exalting their ways above the Word of God.

1:3 Then came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,

Spiritually, is it right to be overly concerned about building our corporations and gaining numbers of attendees to bring wealth?  Or should we be building ourselves spiritually and accruing spiritual wealth through a passionate zeal to live by every Word of God?

Matthew 6:19  Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: 6:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:  6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Haggai 1:4 Is it time for you, O ye, to dwell in your cieled houses, and this house lie waste? 1:5 Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.

Jesus Christ asks us if it is time for us to build corporate entities, auditoriums and physical structures for ourselves?

Is it time for God’s people to seek to collectively amass physical wealth and not to be about the business of building our spiritual house for God’s Spirit; through heartfelt repentance and zeal for God’s Word, including a zeal for rooting out false traditions and a zeal to embrace the purity of the true teachings of God’s Word and to keep his Holy Sabbath unpolluted?

Today large sums are spent in attracting listeners in the hope of gaining numbers and contributions, and yet there is only a very tiny result.  Why?  Because we are NOT pleasing God!  We are NOT right with God!  We reject truth to cleave to false teachings and idols of men!

1:6 Ye have sown much, and bring in little; ye eat [Today we internalize only a tiny bit of spiritual milk and we are not filled with the MEAT of true sound doctrine.], but ye have not enough; ye drink, [We barely taste the Living Waters of the Word of God and we are NOT filled with the Waters of Salvation, which is living by every Word of God.] but ye are not filled with drink; ye clothe you, [We think ourselves to be dressed in the garments of righteousness and we do not see that we are spiritually naked and not clothed with righteousness(Rev 3:16)] but there is none warm; and he that earneth wages earneth wages to put it into a bag with holes.

All of our physical efforts to build up physical church entities will ultimately come to nothing because we are NOT zealous to live by every Word of God.  We are distracted from the spiritual by the physical, compromising with the spiritual in the hope of physical gain.

God commands up to consider that our schisms and endless problems have come upon us because we have been about our own ways and we have not exalted the whole Word of God in order to build up our personal and collective spiritual temple of the Holy Spirit!

1:7 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Consider your ways.

God commanded the people at that time to build his physical temple and Jesus Christ is instructing today’s Spiritual Ekklesia to build themselves up into a spiritual temple today, as a fit clean place for the Spirit of God to dwell in.

Ephesians 2:20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

What does this mean?  Does it mean that we are to build our spiritual house on the teachings of any person who comes along claiming to be an apostle or prophet?  NO!  It means that we are to build our spiritual house on every Word of God as written by the ancient prophets and apostles as inspired by Jesus Christ the Lamb of God!

Any person who comes along claiming to be a prophet or apostle is to be tested and proved (Mat 7, Deu 13,18)  and if he departs from any part of the Word of God and teaches people to follow his own teachings or if he claims to have the authority to decide what the brethren are to believe or do:  Then he is a FALSE PROPHET, a FALSE APOSTLE and a LIAR!

If a corporate church board or leader says concerning spiritual matters “Do this because we have decided.”  They are not people of God; because God would never permit anyone to act contrary to his Word!

2:21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:  2:22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

Haggai 1:8 Go up to the mountain, and bring wood, and build the house; and I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified, saith the LORD.

Why is today’s Spiritual Ekklesia so divided?  Why has our outreach for declaring the Word of the LORD been reduced into a pathetic business model approach?  Why does our LORD despise our efforts?

Because we have departed from our zeal to learn, to keep and to teach; the truth, the whole Word of God!

Brethren, building the physical temple in that day was an allegory that we should be zealous about building God’s spiritual temple today!

1:9 Ye looked for much, and, lo it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow [If our focus is not on living by every Words of God our physical wealth will ultimately be blown away like a wind scatters the dust.] upon it. [This was true for them physically in that day and it is true for us spiritually in our day.] Why? saith the LORD of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house.

1:10 Therefore the heaven over you is stayed from dew, and the earth is stayed from her fruit.

Let us turn to Almighty God and reject the anti-biblical traditions that have enslaved us!  Let us work to establish a proper relationship with our espoused Husband and God the Father.

Let every person individually and collectively BUILD our spiritual character house, which should be the Temple of the Living God!

1 Corinthians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?  3:17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

Just as God brought a drought on returned Judah for neglecting to build his physical House; he has brought a spiritual drought and famine of the truth upon those who neglect his Word and his spiritual Temple today.

Haggai 1:11 And I called for a drought upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the corn, and upon the new wine, and upon the oil, and upon that which the ground bringeth forth, and upon men, and upon cattle, and upon all the labour of the hands.

Then the high priest and the governor obeyed the Word of God and called the people to sincerely repent and build the Temple of God.

1:12 Then Zerubbabel [the governor] the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the LORD their God had sent him, and the people did fear [sincerely repent] before the LORD.

1:13 Then spake Haggai the LORD’s messenger in the LORD’s message unto the people, saying, I am with [God is with the sincerely repentant who keep God’s commandments and do his will, to live by every Word of God.] you, saith the LORD.

Remember this is all about building the temple, it is NOT about Daniel’s 70th Week prophecy about building the city and its walls.

Zerubbabel builds the temple

1:14 And the LORD stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and did work in the house of the LORD of hosts, their God,

Let us also sincerely repent and turn to zealously build up ourselves into a spiritual temple, free from all uncleanness and sin; as a fit dwelling place for the King of the entire universe; and a fitting LIGHT of  godly example, for the whole world to see!

1:15 In the four and twentieth day of the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.

Haggai 2

Haggai 2:1 In the seventh month, in the one and twentieth day of the month, [the seventh and last day of the Feast of Tabernacles] came the word of the LORD by the prophet Haggai, saying,

The building of this physical temple in Jerusalem was an allegory of the spiritual temple that we are to build out of ourselves as a habitation for God through his Spirit.

2:2 Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying,

God encouraged the people who had seen the temple of Solomon and were discouraged by this new effort.

Brethren, I know that we may get discouraged when we see the state of the present day Spiritual Ekklesia.  It is truly pathetic in terms of being a fit dwelling place for God and his Spirit, but the Master Builder is at work:  He is going to get the job done by humbling God’s people and bringing them to sincere repentance and a passionate zeal to live by EVERY WORD of God, which is what the correction of the great tribulation will accomplish.

Right now we are being allowed to make our mistakes, so that when reality hits us hard we will see how wrong our own ways and thoughts are and we will wake up and turn to the Eternal.

2:3 Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?

Then Christ encouraged them, and he encourages us today to: BE STRONG in the work before us!

Just as they were encouraged and made strong to build the physical temple; let us be encouraged and made strong through our Mighty God, for the building of the spiritual temple of the Eternal in the called out brethren!

Brethren, we are engaged in a mighty work to purify, cleanse, build and make ready the spiritual temple of God, the bride; to cleanse the bride and purify her, making the collective bride ready to become of ONE spirit in full UNITY with our espoused Husband on our Wedding Day!

2:4 Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest [Both of these men were types of Jesus Christ the High Priest and King of the called out,]; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts:

Being called out of physical Egypt was a type of God calling out a spiritual people from the spiritual Egypt of bondage to Satan and sin.

2:5 According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of [spiritual] Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not.

The prophet foretells that in the last days the nations would be shaken and a glorious new Temple will be built.  This is a reference to the coming of Christ who will build the glorious Ezekiel Temple in Jerusalem.

2:6 For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while [in future from that time], and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;  2:7 And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come [All nations shall sincerely repent and their desire will be to accept the salvation of Jesus Christ and to go forward to live by every Word of God.]: and I will fill this house  [God will fill the resurrected chosen and the Ezekiel Temple with his glory through the presence of his Holy Spirit.] with glory, saith the LORD of hosts.  2:8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts.

In this latter day, the spiritual temple of God, the bride: will be completed and perfected.  Collectively the faithful overcomers shall be made a glorious and perfect spiritual bride, filled in full measure with the Holy Spirit as a fit spiritual temple for God to dwell in, and to be resurrected and given eternal life

2:9 The glory of this latter [The latter day Spiritual Temple of the bride, and the physical Ezekiel Temple as well.] house shall be greater than of the former [greater and more beautiful than Solomon’s Temple!], saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.

We Must Put Out ALL Sin!

Now a lesson is given to be faithful to God and his Word to dedicate ourselves to our Father’s business. To be faithful we must clean up our act and start keeping the Sabbath holy! We must discard the false traditions that we rely on and we must exalt God’s Word ABOVE the traditions and idols of men! We must stop idolizing our leaders and organizations and blindly obeying men instead of obeying God, when such men differ from the Word of God!

1 Corinthians 5:6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump

5:7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

Haggai 2:10 In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,

2:11 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Ask now the priests concerning the law, saying,

2:12 If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No.

2:13 Then said Haggai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean.

Even a little sin makes the whole person spiritually unclean.  We must root out all sin and separate out error from truth, as soon as it is discovered.

Those who do not keep all of God’s commandments and live by EVERY WORD of God; are unclean to God and they will be rejected by Jesus Christ.

It is no different in today’s called out Ekklesia (Rev 3:16), because the church of God groups have made themselves unclean by mixing the spiritually unclean false teachings and false traditions of our idols of men with the pure truth of the whole Word of God!  The unclean makes the clean unclean also!  Even a little leaven of sin, leavens the whole person or organization!

2:14 Then answered Haggai, and said, So is this people, and so is this nation [polluted and unclean] before me, saith the LORD; and so is every work of their hands; and that which they offer there is unclean.

The whole constellation of today’s Spiritual Ekklesia and professing Christianity is unclean and polluted and disgusting to Jesus Christ; if we will not live by EVERY WORD of God!

Therefore we are being cast out of his mouth, vomited out of the body of Christ into severe correction.  We are full of pride and spiritually blind, unable to see ourselves as God sees us. Our Sabbaths and Feasts are disgusting to God the Father and Jesus Christ,  because they are our own days kept our own way, and not kept according to the Word of God!

Consider the sincere repentance of the people at that time and how when the people began to build the Temple of God [especially spiritually, by keeping every Word of God with zeal]; God respected their repentance and cared for them.

Jesus Christ has smote today’s brethren only a little, and we will not turn to him to cleanse themselves of our idolatry and sins; therefore Jesus Christ is going to eject us into the correction of the furnace of affliction so that the spirit may be saved by the affliction of the flesh.

2:15 And now, I pray you, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the temple of the LORD:

Let spiritual Israel consider, that for all our efforts we have become weaker and more divided.  Why?  Because we reject truth and any zeal for godliness in order to follow our own ways, and we will not exalt the Eternal God to live by his every Word!

2:16 Since those days were, when one came to an heap of twenty measures [of grain], there were but ten: when one came to the pressfat for to draw out fifty vessels out of the press, there were but twenty.

2:17 I smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labours of your hands; yet ye turned not to me, saith the LORD.

Physical blessings were promised for obedience to the physical Mosaic Covenant; and spiritual blessings are promised for obedience to the spiritual New Covenant, including the blessing of being changed to spirit and receiving the gift of eternal life.

We have the promise of Jesus Christ that from the day that we begin to cleanse ourselves from our idolatry of men and false traditions and set ourselves to learn and keep and to teach the whole Word of God; God will bless us with an increase in spiritual knowledge and understanding that will prepare us for an eternal office of responsibility in God’s eternal Kingdom.

2:18 Consider now from this day and upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid, consider it.

2:19 Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I bless you.

If the brethren of today’s spiritual Ekklesia will turn away from their idolatry to reject all error and to embrace the truth and to live by every Word of God, to be zealous for godliness [God is truth, and God’s Spirit is truth] God will bless us with spiritual blessings and a good reward for all eternity.

Zerubbabel was a type of Jesus Christ who will rule all nations at his coming; the former Zerubbabel himself will be resurrected and changed to spirit and he will have a part in the Kingdom of God.

2:20 And again the word of the LORD came unto Haggai in the four and twentieth day of the month, saying,

2:21 Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth;

2:22 And I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen; and I will overthrow the chariots [vehicles], and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother.

The physical temple builder Zerubbabel, was chosen as a type of Jesus Christ, the Master Temple Builder; who is even now working to perfect his bride who is the Father’s spiritual temple!

2:23 In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith the LORD, and will make thee as a signet  [a sign or allegorical type]: for I have chosen thee [Zerubbabel  was chosen to be a sign, and type of Jesus Christ], saith the LORD of hosts.
