Genesis 3

In Genesis 3 God gave a command in order to test the man and the woman to see if they would be faithful to their Maker or if they would follow another or decide right and wrong for themselves.

Satan the Adversary of God appears on the scene and begins to entice the woman by bringing up the subject of the forbidden fruit.

The term translated “serpent” is from the word “hiss” H 5172, considered to be the flying serpent dragon or Satan from other scriptures. Satan was referred to as a dragon [flying serpent” in Rev 12:3-17, Rev 13:2 and 13:4, Rev 16:13, Rev 20:2].

This was not a literal physical serpent, it was Satan the spirit cherub being described in terms of a serpent.

This description “serpent” does not refer to any physical snake.  It referred to the spirit being Satan who because of his appearance was worshiped as the winged serpent Quetzalcoatl in Latin America and a dragon in the orient where he is considered a good luck [good fortune] bringer.

Satan begins to entice the woman by bringing up the subject of the forbidden fruit.

Notice very carefully here, God did not say that the fruit would kill; he said that the act of eating the fruit would kill: for the wages of sin [living contrary to the way that brings life] is death.  The nature of this fruit had nothing to do with the issue which issue is: Will we zealously live by every Word of God or will we decide for ourselves as to what we regard as good and evil? Please read our book on Ecclesiastical Authority.

Any departure, watering down, or compromising with any part of the whole Word of God is sin and brings the end result of death.  Whether it is eating a fruit or some meat that God has forbidden to eat, or idolizing the words of men above the Word of God to follow men and turn away from any zeal to live by every Word of God.

The woman and the man lost their zeal for keeping and obeying the Word of God; just like we have done today!  They decided right and wrong for themselves instead of obeying the Word of God!  Just like the latter day Ekklesia, who reject much of the Word of God to remain faithful to their idols of men and false traditions!  The very same TEST and the very same failure has come to many of those who call themselves the people of God today!

Since that day in Eden, mankind has rejected living by the Word of God for millennia. The “wisdom” of man has destroyed the planet and brought endless bloodshed, pain and misery on humanity and all other creatures.

WE NEED GOD! Like any young child needs its parents!

Like a little child we may think that we are able, but we simply lack the experience, the wisdom, and the ability; to take care of ourselves and this good earth which God has given to us.

WE NEED A FATHER to lead and guide us and teach us how to live and get along with each other.

Eve and Adam thought that they could decide things for themselves and so rejected their Father Creator.

All history since then has been a bloody and graphic demonstration of how wrong they were. Mankind cannot find the way to peace or life eternal.

We cannot discern between right and wrong on our own, we need HELP, we need someone to show us the way. Only when all peoples realize this and are ready to humble themselves before their Creator will they begin to follow His instructions leading to peace.

Any departure from what God has commanded us is a rejection of the wisdom of God

Eating a fruit that God forbade him to eat, was not simply about the fruit itself; it was about rejecting obedience to God by not doing what God had said.

In the garden Eve and then Adam turned away from obeying their Creator to decide right and wrong for themselves, rejecting the Word of their LORD!

Ever since that time the vast majority have rejected the Word of God to remain faithful to their idols of men and their false, contrary to scripture traditions!

Genesis 3:1 Now the serpent [Satan] was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? 3:2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

Satan told the woman that she would not die if she rejected the Word of God to decide right and wrong for herself!

This is the same lie being told to the brethren by Satan through their leaders today!  They say: “God doesn’t mind if we are lax for his Word and zealous for our own ways!  We are God’s people and whatever we do, must be right, because God left us in charge.  Obey us and do not question us by God’s Word for we are leaders in place of God, between God and the brethren.”

Taking advantage of the fact that death would not be immediate Satan told the lie that in deciding for ourselves we would not die.  He added that we would be like God [exalt ourselves as equals with God] if we decided right from wrong for ourselves instead of letting God decide right from wrong for us.

3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Deciding for ourselves always looks good to those who have no love to live by every Word of God.  We love self more than we love God, and because of this self- love and self-exaltation and pride; we are led away from our zeal to live by every Word of God just as Eve and Adam were.

3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

The following is literal and is also figurative, for they knew that they had disobeyed their Maker and were physically and spiritually naked; devoid and empty of the righteousness of obeying God; just like today’s Laodicean Ekklesia which is spiritually wretched and naked. Without the righteousness of God because of exalting their own ways above the Word of God: Instead of running to God in sincere repentance they tried to cover up for themselves.

Eve and Adam were not ashamed of seeing each other:  They were already one flesh and “knew” one another fully.

Adam and Eve were afraid of being seen by God, for they knew that they had sinned and disobeyed him.  They were moved by fear and shame to try and hide their physical and spiritual nakedness by making clothing and hiding from God in the bush.

3:7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.

The Creator came to see his creation; and they hid from him because their sin had separated them from God.  They had rebelled and decided for themselves what would be right or wrong in their own eyes; instead of obeying their Creator.

Consider when we were all little children; did most of us not at some time or other, do something that we knew our parents had forbidden or taught us was wrong?  Were we not ashamed and afraid that our parents would find out and correct us?

Adam and Eve, although fully physically developed were full of that same fear and shame because they knew that they had acted against the Word of their Creator.

Today we who claim that we have God’s Spirit should be full of fear and shame also, because of our departure to follow idols of men and false traditions, instead of being passionately zealous to live by every Word of God.

3:8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

Adam knew that he was naked of faithfulness to keep the Word of God and that he did not have on the garments of the righteousness of the whole Word of God.  He feared the anger of his Creator for his sin.

It would be well with us if we also understood our sin and feared our God, turning to sincere repentance instead of justifying ourselves.

3:9 And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? 3:10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

Such is human nature. Adam blamed his wife instead of taking responsibility for his own actions. This is partly why man was given authority over woman; so that he would be forced to take responsibility for his own actions.

Friends, the authority of the husband over his wife is 90% about being responsible for his own conduct!  Each husband is going to have to answer God for his own conduct, no matter what his wife or anyone else says.

The same is true in the Ekklesia; there are very many out there who feel safe in justifying themselves by blaming the organization or its elders for their own sins like Adam did with Eve. “I was only following the minister” they will say.

Brethren, this Nazi excuse that we were only following others; WILL NOT WORK WITH Almighty God!  Each and every human being is completely responsible for their OWN conduct; regardless of what others may say or do.

It did not work for Adam and it will not work for anyone else: We shall each be accepted into or denied the paradise of eternal life based on our OWN personal conduct.

Revelation 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

Adam admitted that he had sinned and disobeyed God and then he blamed someone else for his actions.

Genesis 3:11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? 3:12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

Eve admitted that she had sinned and disobeyed God and then blamed Satan; yes Satan had tempted her but she believed him above believing God and she disobeyed God. Both the woman and the man were personally responsible for listening to the temptation and deciding for themselves to disobey the Word of God.

So it is today as the Ekklesia falls to the temptation to be zealous for idols of men; and turns away from zealous obedience to the whole Word of God!

3:13 And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

Every person is responsible for their own conduct, yet there is a very heavy responsibility of guilt for the original deceiver as well.  Because of this sin, Satan was cursed and our elders and leaders who teach men to follow themselves and not to be zealous to live by every Word of God are facing a most severe correction.

Because they use their office to deceive and have not fulfilled their responsibility to teach zeal to live by every Word of God; they will be rejected from being shepherds of God’s flock and prevented from the gift of eternal life, unless they quickly repent (Hos 4:6, Ezek 34, Jer 25, Isaiah 56:11).

3:14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:

The spirit cherub [serpent, dragon] Satan, shall bruise a man [Christ] and then he will ultimately be destroyed by the Son of a woman even the resurrected Jesus Christ.

3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it [Jesus Christ] shall bruise [crush] thy head [permanent destruction], and thou shalt bruise his heel [temporary death for three days and three nights].

Because of her sin the woman was given the monthly cycle and pain in childbirth which no animal has, and Christ here sets the man to rule [to learn to rule responsibly and lovingly] over his wife.

3:16 Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

Adam is judged for listening to the woman and not listening to and keeping the Word of God, for letting himself be led into sin instead of leading in godliness; and we shall all be judged for listening to anyone other than our Mighty God!

3:17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife [and followed her into sin], and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it:

The man and woman were then cast out of paradise and made to struggle against all manner of adversity, so that they might learn through many sorrows that our own ways apart from God are not good.

Adam and his descendants are being forced to see the difference between godliness, which brings life, peace and paradise and deciding for themselves what is right and wrong, which brings all manner of adversity, decay and finally death.

. . . cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; 3:18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

3:20 And Adam called his wife’s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.

Then because of the sins of the woman and man death entered the world and the necessity of a sacrifice came into existence.

The Creator then made cloaks of skins for the man and woman; which skins are examples of the fact that death had entered the world and that their sincerely repented sins might be covered by the sacrifice of Christ, as represented by the sacrifice of animals.

In the beginning all creatures including humans were to eat only vegetation but from that time forth, death reigned in the world and men were to sacrifice clean animals for sin: and the offerer’s of sacrifices must partake [eat] the sacrifices; the sacrificial animals picturing the sacrifice of the Lamb of God for sin and the partaking, picturing the internalizing of the nature and Spirit of God.

3:21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.

Satan said that man could become God, simply by deciding right and wrong for himself.  And while man could be the decider for himself just as God decides things; mankind living that way could not have eternal life!  Only faithful passionate obedience to the way of life that God has ordained can bring eternal life.

Because the man would now decide what was wrong and right for himself, instead of listening to the words of eternal life; the man was rejected from eternal life and the paradise of God.  The Creator denied man eternal life as long as man decided for himself what was right and wrong.

As Adam rejected the Word of God to decide for himself; today’s spiritual Ekklesia rejects any zeal to live by every Word of God, in order to live by their own ways and false traditions.

Just as Adam was rejected from eternal life and eternity with God; so the unrepentant who have rejected zeal to passionately keep the whole Word of God, shall also be kept from entering the Promised Land of eternal life.

3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know [to decide for himself] good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: 3:23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

The way into eternal life and the eternal paradise of God has been shut up and closed by the command of God; except for those specifically called out by God the Father.

3:24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

The Tree of Life

In Genesis 3 two trees are described.  The first tree was the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil and it was forbidden to the man and woman.

This tree was symbolic of deciding right and wrong for ourselves and the command  forbidding eating from this tree was a test command to see if the man and woman would obey God or decide right and wrong for themselves.

Disobeying God in eating from this tree [or in anything else]  represents and consists of deciding for ourselves what us right and wrong instead of living by every Word of God; and the ultimate fruits of this tree is death.

To decide for ourselves to act and live contrary to what God has commanded, is to exalt ourselves above the Word of God and the end of this decision is death.  Therefore this tree could also be called the Tree of Death.

A second tree, the Tree of Life, was the exact opposite of this symbolic tree of death.  The Tree of Life brought LIFE;  just as rejecting obedience to God and taking of the forbidden fruit brought death.

The river of water of life coming out from the throne of God is a picture of the Holy Spirit of life eternal flowing out from God.

Revelation 22:1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

The tree of life nourished by the water was a type of eternal life coming from the waters of the Holy Spirit.

22:2 In the midst of the street [growing up out of the river and overspreading to both sides is the tree of eternal life] of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits [figurative of the fruits of the Holy Spirit], and yielded her fruit every month [the trees bore a new kind of fruit each month]: and the leaves of the tree were for the [spiritual] healing of the nations.

A natural tree has a trunk which here is used to represent Jesus Christ and branches representing the faithful who are in Christ.  It would also have leaves which turn the light of the sun into energy giving strength and life to the whole tree.  The leaves would therefore represent the Holy Spirit which takes in the LIGHT [every Word of God] of God and turns it into spiritual energy, pouring spiritual health and life through the branches and producing the fruits of the Holy Spirit and healing the nations.

There are twelve Fruits of the Spirit:  Love, Joy, Peace, Longsuffering, Gentleness, Goodness, Faith, Meekness, Temperance (Gal 5:22), a Sound Mind which is the ability to absorb and retain the nature of God as defined by the whole Word of God (2 Ti 1:7), Wisdom which is the correct application of God’s Word and Eternal Life.

22:3 And there shall be no more curse [sin or the decay and death that sin brings]: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:

22:4 And they [the people now changed to spirit] shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads [the nature of God will dwell in the minds of all people who are changed to spirit; absolutely no sin allowed].

The Wages of Sin

Romans 6:23  For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

What is this sin that brings death?

1 John 3:3  Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

What is this law which brings long life then?  It is it not the Ten Commandments of God?  and what do the Ten Commandments say?

Exodus 20:12  Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

Who then is our father?  Ultimately our Father is our Creator; first God the Father as the Executive Authority of the creation and then Jesus Christ as the Implementing Authority of the creation.  The one who became Jesus Christ called God in heaven his Father and commanded us to live by every Word of that God the Father.

Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Matthew 4:10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

Deciding right and wrong for ourselves as Eve and Adam did when they failed the test in the garden, is sin and brings death.  While diligently living by EVERY WORD of God is life eternal!

Therefore as the fruit or end result of partaking of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil by rejecting God’s Word for our own ways is death.  Living by EVERY WORD of GOD brings life eternal.

Satan said that man could become God, simply by deciding right and wrong for himself. And while man could be the decider for himself as God decides things; man living by his own ways could not have eternal life!  Only faithful passionate obedience to the way of life that God had and that man outside of God cannot have, can bring eternal life.

Because the man would now decide what was wrong and right for himself, instead of listening to the words of eternal life; the man was rejected from eternal life and the paradise of God. The Creator denied man eternal life as long as man decided for himself what was right and wrong.

As Adam rejected the Word of God to decide for himself; today the Ekklesia reject any zeal to live by every Word of God in order to live by their own ways and false traditions. As Adam was rejected from eternal life and eternity with God; so the unrepentant who have rejected zeal to passionately live by every Word of God, shall also be kept from entering the Promised Land of eternal life.

The way into eternal life and the eternal paradise of God has been shut up and closed and man has been cut off from God by the command of God; except for those specifically called out by God the Father as a kind of early first fruits to God.

Man was cut off from repentance and from turning back to obey God, so that man could learn a lesson through experience, that the way of God is the way of life and that any other way brings death.

This cutting off of mankind from God was essential to prevent the man from repenting and after being changed to spirit with eternal life, sinning again in future.  The whole purpose of cutting man off from God was to allow man to live by his own ways until he had  thoroughly learned that there is no other way to eternal life in peace other than the way of God.

God cut man off from himself, or rather it was the sins of man that cut man off from God

Isaiah 59:1    Behold, the Lord‘s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

When mankind was cut off from the Tree of Life and rejected from the presence of God, God’s plan for salvation started up. That plan was for the Implementing Creator Jesus Christ to give up his God-hood and be made flesh and to live a perfect sinless life at the end of which he would give his life as the sacrificial Lamb of God for humanity, so that he could be a DOOR through which man could be reconciled to God the Father.

We are to live by EVERY WORD of GOD the Father, which is eternal life; but the door to reconciliation to God the Father is our sincere repentance after thoroughly learning that God is the ONLY way to life; a commitment to go and sin no more and to live by every Word of God from henceforth and forever more; and then the Door of Reconciliation which is the sacrifice of the Lamb of God will be applied to us and we shall be reconciled to God our Father in Heaven receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit, and if we continue and overcome we shall inherit  the gift of eternal life.

From Adam to the ascension of Christ on Wave Offering Sunday in 31 A.D., mankind was cut off from God except for a very few called out in faith that Christ would fulfill his mission; and from 31 A.D. to today mankind has been cut off from God except that more have also been called out to have faith in the efficacy of that sacrifice and to live by every Word of God; this is the early Spring Harvest to eternal life.  The Fall Festivals picture another harvest, the main of all humanity who has lived through the past being cut off from God and from the tree of Life.

John 10:9  I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

John 5:11  And this is the record, that God hath given to us [those faithful to live by every Word of God] eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 5:12  He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.

The bread of manna was another allegory of the true Bread of Life, Jesus Christ; who came down from heaven to give himself as our Bread of Life, for our salvation.

Salvation is not just saying “I repent” and consenting to being dunked in a pool of water, or attending some organizational meetings, while continuing in sin.

Salvation requires the internalization of the nature of God; through diligent study, and the practical application of the whole Word of God in our own minds and in all our deeds!  It i s essential for us to OVERCOME and to “Go and sin no more,” and for us to live as Christ lived!

John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me [and lives as  Christ lives] hath everlasting life.

Jesus Christ being ONE in full unity with God the Father, was sent by the Father as the Bread of Life, for all God the Father would call.

Carefully consider these words given just before Passover and Unleavened Bread.

6:48 I am that bread of life. 6:49 Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 6:50 This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die. 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

Jesus explains what the wine and unleavened bread of Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread mean.

6:52 The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? 6:53 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.

6:54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. 6:55 For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. 6:56 He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.

We are to take the nature of Christ into ourselves and we are to live as Christ lived; We are to live by God the Father’s Word as Jesus did!

6:57 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. 6:58 This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

6:59 These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.

John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

John  17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know [be one with] thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

Jesus used the example of a tree, like the example of the Tree of Life [which is to live by EVERY WORD of God] to teach that HE is the way to God the Father and to eternal life.
