Can the God who cannot sin, create sin?
1 John 3:5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
1 Peter 2:22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
People have written to me to say that the pure and holy God created evil, meaning he created sin. This question settles on the meaning and definition of the word evil in Isaiah 45:7. Which is the one scripture in the Bible, and the only one; which states:
Isaiah 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.
The word “evil” here is Strong’s: H7451
In Isaiah 45:7 the word is used as a noun:
2) evil, distress, misery, injury, calamity
2a) evil, distress, adversity
2b) evil, injury, wrong
2c) evil (ethical)
3) evil, misery, distress, injury
3a) evil, misery, distress
3b) evil, injury, wrong
3c) evil (ethical)
In context the word evil is being used to demonstrate the power of God; to rebuke and to bless; and concerns the calling of Cyrus [well over 100 years in advance] to release the prisoners of Judah. God is telling Cyrus that he, God; commands Cyrus to release the prisoners of God’s correction.
In the context when God says he creates “evil” it is a reference to the fact that God can bring on curses and captivity for rebellion. Here evil is used in terms of hardship and suffering for sin; and in no way means that God created sin.
The blessings and cursing’s were shouted to all Israel as they entered the land, in Deu 27. The captivity of Judah was the curse or “evil” and the release of the captivity was a blessing of God.
God the Father and the Son are perfect and cannot abide even exposure to any sin or the wages of sin, which are decay and death, which is what is meant by:
2 Corinthians 6:16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. 6:18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
We are to be pure as God is pure and to be holy as God is holy; with no hint of uncleanness or sin. Even the priests were to wash before entering the temple to serve. If God created sin, then God is the author of sin; which is rebellion against himself!
That is preposterous.
Even Lucifer was perfect until he sinned and became the originator of sin.It was Lucifer who was perfect until he became the creator, the author, the originator; of iniquity [Evil}!
Ezekiel 28:15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. God did not create sin; Lucifer created sin! and so became the Adversary of God! God is not divided against himself therefore he could not create rebellion against himself.
John B sent in this excellent comment adding to the post.
James, I found it interesting how you went about to show that Satan, not God, created sin…….and John would agree with you for he was inspired to tell us this:
“He that committeth sin is of the devil…” I John 3:8
And not of God!
And John then gave us an “old-time” example to show why Abel was killed:
:12 “Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother…”
That killing, or murder…that death was not “of God!”
Or, as Paul told us:
“Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;” Hebrews 2:14
And Satan still exercises that power of death today.
Elsewhere we read:
“Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.” John 8:44
Yes, not only is Satan “a murderer from the beginning,” but he also creates lies…….something our Father cannot do!
Just think: if a father corrects [bring the “evil” of correction upon] his son because of the sin of the son, does that make the father evil? and the creator of the son’s sin?
In order to create sin, God would have to be divided in rebellion against his own self! Because sin is rebellion against the Word of God!
To say that God created “evil” in the sense of creating sin; is to say that the holy perfection of good that is God; is evil! It is calling the ultimate GOOD: Evil!
This is a blasphemy against both God the Father and the Son.
