Amos 4 – 5

Amos 4

The leaders of the nations of Israel and Judah and the leaders and elders of today’s Ekklesia who seek to destroy any zeal to live by every Word of God are likened to the strong bulls of the herd who dominate and seek their own advantage.

Amos 4:1 Hear this word, ye kine [cattle, bulls] of Bashan, that are in the mountain of Samaria, which oppress the poor, which crush the needy, which say to their masters [whose leaders intoxicate them with the strong drink of pride], Bring, and let us drink.

The day of affliction is at hand when God will take us like fish caught on a hook and draw us into great correction.

4:2 The Lord GOD hath sworn by his holiness, that, lo, the days shall come upon you, that he will take you [the Israel of c 721 B.C.] away with hooks, and your posterity [the Israel and Judah and the Spiritual Ekklesia of today] with fishhooks.

Breaches will be made in our defenses and our people [especially today’s Judah] will be removed through the breaches as water flows through the breaches in a dam

4:3 And ye shall go out at the breaches, every cow [People will leave the land like cows which wander from their field through the breaches in a fence.] at that which is before her; and ye shall cast them into the palace, saith the LORD.

God reminds the people of the warnings and the past corrections he has sent; and still we have not repented and turned to him. Therefore he declares that a major correction will come upon us that will destroy our pride and turn the nations of Israel and the whole world to him.

God has removed many of our blessings already and today’s Spiritual Ekklesia has responded by fighting with each other and coveting physical things instead of diligently seeking the spiritual things of God.

Today’s Ekklesia is like a group of little children who fight each other as their house burns down around them, ignoring the warnings from their Father to obey him, or he will spank them.

Jeroboam set up his golden calves in Bethel and Dan (1 Kings 12:29 – 1 Kings 13:10), and led Israel to sacrifice to idols there. He established the feast of the eighth month [of which today’s remnant is Thanksgiving] to replace God’s Feast of the seventh month.

The people sacrificed to idols and made their meat [grain, unleavened bread] offerings with leaven.  The unleavened  bread offerings are to be unleavened as a type of Messiah the Bread of Life and the pure Word of God.

4:4 Come to Bethel, and transgress; at Gilgal multiply transgression; and bring your sacrifices every morning, and your tithes after three years:

4:5 And offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving with leaven, and proclaim and publish the free offerings: for this liketh you, O ye children of Israel, saith the Lord GOD.

Go ahead and remain in your sins and I will correct you, saith the Eternal.

4:6 And I also have given you cleanness of teeth [God will also give us famine because we commit idolatry with idols of men and false traditions.]  in all your cities, and want of bread in all your places: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.

Scarcity of physical rain is an allegory of God withholding the spiritual rain of God’s Spirit in the called out who apostatize to follow idols of men; for God’s Spirit is the Spirit of Truth and if we reject truth we are rejecting God’s Spirit.

Brethren, God’s Spirit is truth, therefore those with God’s Spirit will love the truth.  Godly men who are full of God’s Spirit will quickly turn and accept what is true.  It is ungodly wickedness to refuse truth and to be willing to close ones eyes to truth and even to lie to cleave to falsehood.
God is testing the people to see who is godly and has God’s love for truth and to see who is evil and rejects truth.
By their love of truth or the lack thereof, we can discern who is godly and who is not.
How do you want to be judged by God?
John 14:17  Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
John 15:26  But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

Amos 4:7 And also I have withholden the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest: and I caused it to rain upon one city, and caused it not to rain upon another city: one piece was rained upon, and the piece whereupon it rained not withered.

Today’s drought is only the very early beginning warning; soon the drought will become so severe in the tribulation [when it is possible that no rain at all will come to our peoples], so that the thirsty will be forced to migrate for lack of water.

4:8 So two or three cities wandered unto one city, to drink water; but they were not satisfied: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.

In the days of ancient Israel the people gathered together for the available water, today men build pipelines, dams and canals.   Yet for the same sins: God is beginning to withhold the blessing of rain and dew in due season.  In the tribulation much of that infrastructure will fail and there will be much thirst, famine and starvation.

4:9 I have smitten you with blasting and mildew [fungal infestations and disease of our crops]: when your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees increased, [when our plants actually produce fruit, pests will eat up the produce] the palmerworm devoured them: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.

Disease and insects afflict our crops and we rely on ever more dangerous and deadly chemicals that are now destroying the health of the population.

God has afflicted us with war and disease in a small warning, and our affliction will increase dramatically in the coming time of trouble, so that the stench of death will abound.

4:10 I have sent among you the pestilence [disease especially that carried by rodents] after the manner of Egypt: your young men have I slain with the sword, and have taken away your horses [our mobility will fail]; and I have made the stink [of disease and death] of your camps to come up unto your nostrils: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.

We have been subjected to diseases like cancer and heart attacks as well as much else, until the costs of our medical services sap the economy and strength of the nation; and we have fallen into many wars, most of our own choosing, in order to seize the wealth of others.

4:11 I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.

Some of our cities suffered massive destruction in wars like WW 2, and we did not learn to turn to God, but leaned even more to our own means.

4:12 Therefore thus will I do unto thee, O Israel: and because I will do this unto thee, prepare to meet thy God [prepare to die], O Israel.  4:13 For, lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is his name.

Amos 5

Amos 5:1 Hear ye this word which I take up against you, even a lamentation, O house of Israel.

This is the correction of the latter day tribulation which is very close at hand.

5:2 The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is forsaken upon her land; there is none to raise her up.

God here speaks of only ten percent of ancient Israel surviving the drought and terrible onslaught of Assyria, and only and only a small remnant of Israel/Judah will survive the wars, famine, thirst, starvation and disease that is about to come upon us in our time.

5:3 For thus saith the Lord GOD; The city that went out by a thousand shall leave an hundred, and that which went forth by an hundred shall leave ten, to the house of Israel.

Therefore quickly repent, oh idolatrous Spiritual Ekklesia, while God may be found of you: for your punishment will be of a similar manner.  God will afflict our flesh so that he may humble us and save our spirit.

5:4 For thus saith the LORD unto the house of Israel, Seek ye me, and ye shall live:

5:5 But seek not [the calf idols of] Bethel [Be diligently zealous to follow and live by every Word of God and do not follow idols of men.  Do not put your trust in fortifications and cities and the strength of men, but put your trust in the Eternal God!], nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beersheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Bethel shall come to nought.

5:6 Seek the LORD, and ye shall live; [Sincerely repent and be diligently zealous to live by EVERY WORD of God.] lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph [both physical and today’s apostate spiritual Israel], and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel.

Our idols of men will not save us.

It is WE who must seek God the Father, for if the spiritually called out will not turn to zealously live by every Word of  God and our salt of passionate zeal for godliness has lost its savor; how can anyone be saved at all?

5:7 Ye who turn judgment to wormwood [we who have perverted godly judgment into the bitterness of injustice], and leave [turn away from] off righteousness [godliness] in the earth,

5:8 Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning [God can turn death into the bright morning of life.], and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name:

5:9 That strengtheneth the spoiled against the strong, so that the spoiled shall come against the fortress.

We, the Ekklesia of God, who have turned from the Word of God, forgetting sound judgment and turning good into evil: Shall not our God correct his faithless bride before he corrects the nations?

5:10 They [the wicked hate those who warn them] hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.

Those who despise correction from God’s Word: Will God not recompense your rejection of him?

5:11 Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens [seize his necessities of life] of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink wine of them.

God will take away what we have gained through oppressing others.

5:12 For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right [denying justice].

Many elders work for mammon and not for love of God.  They take to themselves the best of everything and feed not the flock with the goodness of the Bread of Life; which is the whole Word of God.  Jesus Christ is the Bread of Life, and the Word of God defines his very mind, spirit and nature.

When we compromise with any part of God’s Word we reject the Author of that Word!

Therefore God will break up our idols and remove our sinful gains.

5:13 Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time.

The abused brethren keep silent lest they be subjected to further abuse.

Let us quickly and sincerely repent and:

5:14 Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye have spoken.

5:15 Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

If we repent and learn to love every Word of God which Word defines God, and do what is good in God’s sight; and learn to hate and be repulsed by any compromise with that good Word, and begin to live by every Word of God, then we shall become acceptable to the Eternal God.

However, if we will not sincerely repent and seek to live by every Word of God we will be severely corrected.

5:16 Therefore the LORD, the God of hosts, the LORD, saith thus; Wailing shall be in all streets; and they shall say in all the highways, Alas! alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing.

5:17 And in all vineyards shall be wailing: for I will pass through thee, saith the LORD.

5:18 Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you[the unrepentant sinner referenced in v 16-17 above]? the day of the LORD is darkness, and not light [God will inflict justice on the wicked].

Here it is revealed that this is a dual prophecy for that day and for this latter day as well: And the warning is to the sinner and the unrepentant in today’s Ekklesia who are not zealous for every Word of God yet who desire the coming of our Lord, proudly thinking themselves righteous.

Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Those who think themselves godly as they follow idols of men and refuse to live by every Word of God, will not be resurrected to spirit by Jesus Christ as they suppose.

Amos 5:19 As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.

Christ’s coming will be a huge disappointment for those who are righteous in their own eyes and are not zealous for the righteousness of living by every Word of God.

5:20 Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?

God despises the Sabbaths and Festivals observed by much of today’s Spiritual Ekklesia; because we use them to deceive ourselves into thinking that we are godly when we are full of sin.

5:21 I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell [we have no sweet perfume of dedicated service to God] in your solemn assemblies.

Today God does not accept us or our offerings and God does not accept our Sabbaths and Feasts; because we idolize men and pollute God’s Sabbaths and Feasts.

5:22 Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat [unleavened bread] offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fat beasts.

God even rejects our music and songs of praise because they are hypocritical, for we sing his praises and we have no zeal to live by his Word; preferring to follow our idols of men and rejecting truth to cleave to false teachings.

5:23 Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of thy viols.

God despises the Festivals that we observe in his name, because we are NOT righteous in his sight.

We walk all over God’s Word and justifying our sins, saying that we are his temple and he loves us and will overlook our sins. In so saying we condemn ourselves for we acknowledge the we are his temple as we pollute that temple with sin.

Such persons God will destroy.

1 Corinthians 3:17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

God wants us to do  justice and to make godly judgments and he wants us to live righteously, living by every Word of God.

Amos 5:24 But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.

Today spiritual Israel offers sacrifices of praise and offerings to God and we pretend to keep his Sabbaths and Festivals; while we follow our idols of men and we commit spiritual adultery against the Mighty One of our baptismal commitment.

5:25 Have ye offered unto me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?

5:26 But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves.

Our idols are our false traditions of men, human leaders and the corporate organizations that we have exalted and allowed to come between us and a passionate zeal to live by every Word of God.

5:27 Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the LORD, whose name is The God of hosts.
